Ballmer On Microsoft's 'Securing the Perimeter' Strategy
|
Our Ballmer blogging continues Microsoft's CEO shed some light on Redmond's latest attempt to get its security house in order. The company's "Securing the Perimeter" strategy is focused on securing both the client and the network perimeter, Ballmer told partner-conference attendees. He said the company will introduce new technology into Windows XP SP2, which is due to ship by Q3 of 2004, that will do more to reduce vulnerabilities on browsing, messaging and buffer-overrun fronts. It also will introduce as part of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (due in the latter half of 2004) technology that will provide "perimeter inspection" capabilities, such as analyzing whether a local client has been infected by a virus or worm before that client is attached to the network. Ballmer also highlighted Microsoft's plans for a new version of Internet Security and Acceleration Server (code-named "Stingray" and due late 2004) that will provide application firewalling. |
