The next test release of Windows Vista, slated for late August, according to our testing tipsters, will be designated Release Candidate (RC) 1. That usually means near-final, stable, generally usable code. But in the case of Vista, will RC1 live up to its name? That's the question Longhorn Blogger Robert McLaws is pondering. McLaws is advocating Microsoft add (a currently unscheduled) Beta 3 to the Vista calendar which would likely delay the release to manufacturing (RTM) date, but improve the overall quality. Anyone else out there want to see a Vista Beta 3? For his part, former Vista evangelist Robert Scoble says Vista isn't ready for prime-time and could benefit from yet another ship delay.

And, I think that Microsoft should release another beta for Windows XP before declaring *it* to be of 'Release Candidate" quality. It simply has too many unresolved bugs. ;)

...work expands to fill up the time allotted for it. Get the thing out the door. It's never going to be perfect, anyway. As long as there are no major problems, ship it. Putting a nice box and shrink wrap around it has never worked in the past, so why worry about it. It's always been a work in process!Ship it!

I don't think it really matters any more whether Microsoft chooses to launch Windows Vista in January or February of the next year. As far as I am concerned, I would like to see a stable operating system with an emphasis on performance and user experience and a little bit of security. If a postponement of a few weeks can greatly improve these fiels, then they should go for it. I also agree that the lack of stable hardware that is ready to support the Media Center is a serious reason why Microsoft should leave some things for a Rollup Update 1 after Vista becomes a RTM product. But let's be honest with ourselves. Will a Beta 3 really help the situation? I don't think so. No great improvements can happen is such a short term, taking into account Vista's dark past. It will only serve the curiosity of some people and maybe help communicate the fact that Vista is progressing. I think that CTPs can make up for the lack of a Windows Vista Beta 3. Afterall, Microsoft has been working on Windows Vista for more than four years with little success. What makes us think that everything will run smoothly and we will have an RTM in six months or so? That's the reason why Microsoft needs to defragment itself, with bold and painful decisions that don't include a further postponement of Vista's launch date.I must say that the launch of Windows Vista reminds me of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Both Microsoft and Greece willingly got themselves in an overwhelming situation and kept working for the best while everyone else said "You can't make it". The difference is that Greece never changed the final date.
