Microsoft Readies New 'Buglight' Security Aid

Microsoft has been beating ever more loudly the least-privileged user account (LUA) drum. While Microsoft, partners and customers acknowledge that systems are far more secure when users aren't designated as admins, software compatibility issues have hampered LUA's widespread adoption. To try to remedy this disconnect, Microsoft is readying a new tool, tentatively named "LUA Buglight," that will find code bugs that impact compatibility for non-admin users. A pre-alpha version of the tool is being tested now, and Microsoft hopes to make it available early next year.

Rick Stockton :

I tried to improve security on a friend's Windoze (sic) computer by having her run as a "limited" User. She couldn't even use the printer, much less the CD/RW.It makes sense to log in as "administrator" to Update your antivirus defs, download patches, and install new software. But HP's Printer Driver requiring Write access to system directories has been a show-stopper.Now HP can be pressured to fix their Driver Code by Microsoft, rather than "mere victims" who already paid for their Printers. Thank you! Thank you!
