Google reiterated its intentions on August 27 to get into the hosted applications business. But no one should equate the so-called "Google Apps for Your Domain" bundle with Microsoft Office. Look what's in the "GoogApp" pack: Gmail, GoogleTalk, Google Calendar and Google Page Creator. No Word, Excel or PowerPoint competitors here. Google Apps for Your Domain is more like Windows Live Essentials or the soon-to-be delivered Office Live than it's like Microsoft Office. Nonetheless, Google Apps for Your Domain is sure to be just as hyped as the mythical "GoogleOffice" that was supposed to materialize a year ago (and still, to this day, has not).

Isn't this just googles offering to compete with Windows Live Custom Domains (domains.live.com)? Seems like its a broader offering too

I just don't see how they expect to compete with Microsoft. Google's weak point is and has always been the lack of live tech support. Their way of Tech Support is via email, which just does not work.If you are going to want users to use your applications, then you need the support infrastructure to support this. Whether it's outsourced overseas or domestic, you need something other than email.Good or bad, Microsoft does offer this "live" person support. Perhaps Google should cut-back on the gourmet chefs and lavish meals and invest in something that will help it's customers....live tech support.Randy
