Among the wrinkles still to be ironed out of Microsoft's Windows Vista before the long-awaited client operating system goes gold is the tendency of Vista's shiny new "glass" UI to balk at Java-based applications.
In eWEEK Labs' Vista tests, most recently with the post-RC1 Build 5728, Aero Glass has reverted to the sans-translucence, sans-3D effects, plain old Aero interface each time we've launched a Java-based client application.
We've experienced the glass-out with the Azureus Bittorrent client, with the XenEnterprise 3.0 management console, and with the Eclipse software development tool. In each case, Aero Glass wasn't just disabled for the (apparently) offending application, but for our test machine as a whole--until we closed the Java app.
Sun Microsystems would do well to give a ring to one of the interop contacts at Microsoft that came out of the firms' historic make-nice agreement back in 2004, and figure out how to make Java apps first-class Vista citizens.
Vista RTM is--or should be, at least--right around the corner.

Old news. This has AFAIK been fixed in the Java 6 Beta.

Use the new beta version of Java, it supports the glass effect. Eclipse 3.2 works fine with it.

The article does not specify which Java version was used, and I suspect it was not the latest one (Java SE 5.0u9). Java SE releases prior to Java SE 5.0u8 indeed did not work well on Vista, but the newer ones, including the upcoming Java SE 6 (builds available from http://jdk6.dev.java.net) do support Vista. I tried it out, and JRE 6 beta 2 does work with Aero Glass.

Java 6 is designed to work with Vista, and does work with it quite well. Check what JVM you are runnign. Have a look at this article for more info. http://tinyurl.co.uk/1na8

Christmas Day falls on December 25. It is preceded by Christmas Eve on December 24, and in some countries is followed by Boxing Day on December 26. I have IBM NET VISTA machine with p4 1.7ghz processor and 1 gb ddr ram . I want to install windows vista ultimate edition on my machine with aero glass feature . can any one give me the possibilites to upgrade the graphics card.

It does not work, even the support desk of one of our Danish homebank systems, do not know what to do. I have no use of Vista right now, can not open any Java application on the net. nor on local machine. So please stop the hype and deliver what ever is needed. People are buying Vista in navie faite to Microsoft.

I'm not sure what to make of all these comments saying this Java on Vista works. When I take a simple Java program I wrote in XP that has a few Swing widgets on it, they end up displaying black on Vista. After running the mouse over the widgets, they draw a little better, but behavior is still totally messed up. All this behavior is seen using jdk-6u10-ea-bin-b11, which is the latest I can find as of January 31, 2008.
