Vista Licensing: Make That 2 Steps Back, or 11
|
This morning I weighed in on Microsoft's move to expand its PITA WPA beyond the individual consumers who've had to deal with product activation since Windows XP shipped, to include formerly exempt volume license customers. That's a step back for Microsoft, but, as I noted, Redmond's smart moves in liberalizing licensing for Windows Server customers represented a step forward. Then, I read this morning about how Microsoft plans to limit machine-to-machine transfers of Windows Vista to one per purchase and how Microsoft plans, ridiculously, to enact new limits on which versions of Windows are allowed to run as guest OSes under virtualization software. It'll be interesting to see how many more times Microsoft can knock its Windows client users in the head before these buyers begin jump ship en masse.
