From Microsoft Watch: Just like Windows Vista, Office 2007 is now officially a 2007 product. Sure, Microsoft is still going to release to manufacturing (RTM) the Office 2007 bits in calendar 2006 (although a bit later than it expected). But only volume licensees will actually be able to get the Office 2007 bits in 2006; everyone else will have to wait until January 2007. Sounds like Microsoft is now planning a double-header product launch to start the new year. The news of Office 2007 new rollout schedule comes the same day that Microsoft appointed Office chief Steven Sinofsky to move to Windows to get the trains running on time.

Slipping the Office ship date has impact on many more products than you may realize. Products like Office Live, the Live Meeting products, and the new Small Business Accounting are all dependent on the Office 2007 code base, and will not be able or allowed to ship until Office does. The revenue impact is huge, frustration is high, and morale is plummeting.
