Gates Out; Ozzie Becomes Chief Software Architect

Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates is planning to distance himself further in 2008 from the company he founded 31 years ago. Microsoft announced June 15 that Gates will be transitioning out of his day-to-day Microsoft responsibilities to spend more time on his health and education philanthropy work. Stepping up, as part of the two-year transition will be two of Microsoft's current chief technology officers: Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie. Ozzie will take on the title of Chief Software Architect and Mundie will become Chief Research and Strategy Officer.

Folks who are saying Ray will make online happen because he has the experience: To my knowledge, Ray has excellent DESKTOP COLLABORATION experience in Notes/Domino and Groove but...what qualifies him to be the guy to put Microsoft...well...online?Don't get me wrong. Ray's a visionary and the right man for the job but...he'll need to pull together technical mavens who have "been there done that" in order to compete in the live/online arena. The jump to online services is a whole new mindset; more about hardware managment AND good software but...software in finite chunks. At this point, even Oracle knows how to do THAT better with their online accounting modules. However, all is not bad. At this point, Microsoft's assets include lots of cold hard cash just sitting there, to lure capable online mavens to the Circle of Ozzie and his wonderful things to come. Especially, now that BeelzaBill has promised to "do less evil."Should be fun to watch.Ray Myers
