Office Chief to Take the Windows Reins?
|
"Fire the leadership now!" exclaimed the Mini-Microsoft blog on March 21, the day that Microsoft announced it was moving the Windows Vista launch from late 2006 to January 2007. If a Wednesday Wall Street Journal report is true, Microsoft may be set to do just that. The Journal reported that Microsoft is planning to replace current Windows boss Jim Allchin with the head of Microsoft Office development, Steven Sinofsky. The Sinofsky appointment would take effect around the time Allchin is set to retire, which -- as Microsoft announced last year -- is timed to coincide with the completion of the Windows Vista release. According to the Journal, "People familiar with the matter said the restructuring is not directly tied to the Vista delay." The report on Microsoft's planned changing of the Windows guard comes the day after company officials revealed a new delivery plan for Vista. Microsoft is now planning to launch Vista in January 2007. Volume-licensees who want to upgrade Vista over older versions of Windows will be able to do so in November 2006. But Vista won't be available preloaded on new hardware or in the retail channel until January, as opposed to the latter half of this year, as Microsoft officials had been promising since August 2004. A Microsoft spokeswoman, contacted for comment on the Journal story, said "Microsoft doesn't respond to rumors and there is no organization news to share at this time." If and when Sinofsky, Senior Vice President of Office, does take over as head of Windows, the move will have far-reaching impact on the way the team operates. Sinofsky has the reputation of a strict, schedule-bound manager who keeps the trains running on time. The Office division is reflective of his discipline: Betas of Office releases are delivered like clockwork. Community Technology Preview (CTP) interim test releases are shunned in the current Office organization. And the Office teams ships a new version of its namesake product every two to three years, without fail. Co-President, Platforms Products & Services Division Allchin, who has been a key leader on Windows during the entire time of his 16-year tenure, has been more focused on quality and processes than ship deadlines. Under Allchin, Microsoft established the Core Operating Systems Division (COSD) team, charged with developing and deploying new quality metrics, testing procedures and architectural processes and guidance across the Windows. "Steven Sinofsky has established a very solid track record for substantive, timely, and very successful products, over several releases of Office, and it's logical for Microsoft to shift him to Windows as the Office 2007 development cycle winds down," said Peter O'Kelly, an analyst with The Burton Group. "Does he (Sinofsky) has history as a Windows guy?" asked one Microsoft partner, who asked not to be named. "To guide the development of windows you need to have a very firm grounding in OS (operating system) architecture. At least he knows the corporate landscape really well." Sinofsky, a 17-year Microsoft veteran, has held a variety of positions in the Office organization. He currently oversees research and development of many of the Office System family of products. "We've been asking who is going to keep the technical guys on Windows from telling Kevin Johnson(the other Co-President of Microsoft's Platform Products & Services Division) anything that want knowing that he wouldn't have the depth to push back," said Directions on Microsoft senior analyst Greg DeMichillie. "Sinofsky is the guy and he's got the technical ability and the strong personality to do it." But the bigger question is "what does this mean for 'integrated innovation,' DeMichillie said. "When running the Office division, Sinofsky made a habit out of ruthlessly managing dependencies. If they didn't own it, they weren't going to depend on it. If Microsoft wants to reform the way it manages, schedules and build products, innovated integration has got to go." Burton Group's O'Kelly emphasized that Sinofsky's potential appointment should not be perceived as a reprimand to Allchin and his lieutenants. "In the grand scheme of things, I don't think the Vista schedule slip is much more than a short-term (albeit global ) embarrassment for Microsoft," O'Kelly said. "The company has consistently and emphatically said it would ship Vista when it's ready, and was targeting the second half of 2006. While some alleged internal target dates were mentioned in the press (e.g., the reported August RTM goal), Microsoft is still planning to hit the second half of 2006 for the RTM (release to manufacturing) and corporate market. "It's unfortunate for Microsoft and its hardware partners that they'll miss the 2006 consumer PC holiday shopping season, but it's ultimately not a game-changer," O'Kelly added. (This story was updated on March 23 to include comments from Microsoft and Directions on Microsoft analyst DiMichillie.) |
