Same Players, Same Venue, Different Antitrust Suit

There's a new antitrust suit against Microsoft in the European Union. Many of the same competitors who helped fuel the last EC vs. Microsoft suit, plus a couple of new players – Sun Microsystems, Oracle, RealNetworks, IBM and Nokia -- are behind the latest Microsoft antitrust suit, too. It's not clear yet what differentiates the latest suit from the most recent one, which concluded in 2004. We're guessing the new case might be specific to Windows Vista and Office 2007. The group suing Microsoft, known as the European Committee for Interoperable Systems, is claiming that with its forthcoming products, Microsoft "threatens to deny enterprises and individual consumers real choice."

Colin Bowern :

This explains why we haven't seen anything new and stunning come out from competitive companies -- they're blowing all their cash on lawyers. It's a shame to see all this money being wasted on lawyers. The funds would be better spent for research and development of new/competitive technology than law suits that continue on years after the original subject product's lifecycle. Let the lawyers focus on real criminals and the technologists focus on new/improved technology.
