The European Union (EU) threw the book at Microsoft on July 12. While some were speculating that Microsoft might be hit with as much as a $250 million (U.S.) fine for what the European Commission (EC) declared as Microsoft's failure to comply with antitrust provisions that date back to 2004, the actual EC fine came in at $357 million. Microsoft is continuing to insist it has not flouted the EC's stipulations and that it will appeal the latest fine.
