Is Apple's 'Leopard' Really 'Vista 2.0'?

We like a good Windows Vista dig as much as anyone. But is Apple CEO Steve Jobs really justified in calling Mac OS X 10.5 (a k a "Leopard") the equivalent of Vista 2.0? Can't the 64-bit versions of Vista fully support 64-bit applications? And isn't Apple's TimeMachine feature the same as Windows Volume Shadow Copy? We admit we are no Apple experts here at Microsoft Watch. But is Leopard really the Mac OS X release that should bid Vista "hasta la vista"?

Just three short years ago, at another WWDC, when they were preparing to introduce Tiger, there was a big banner across the hall, with an image of the Tiger DVD, and the words: "Redmond, start your copiers."Apparently they did...so why should anyone be surprised? The real issue isn't that MSFT copies other's innovations - that's their stock in trade - the issue in Vista's case is the time and money they're expending trying to get it done this time around. By the time Vista finally ships, Leopard will send them back to the drawing board.

Anything is better than Vista... Id rather use Windows 95 over Vista... So yes, 10.5 is what Vista should of been. A clean, working, stable OS.

Man this thing just won't die. See the 1500+ posts on MJ's blog about this very subject. I'm beginning to suspect Redmond wrote a script for you guys.

Scott has got it in one, Microsoft troll tactics seem have the same level of indecent mistruths & fabrication that links them back to the company.

Granny Smith :

Oh Mary-Jo, what folly do you speak of??

For starters:

1. You can't compare WIndows Flip 3D to Cover Flow in the Finder (one is MSFT's attempt at an application/window switcher like Apple's Exposè - first in Panther 10.3 - and the other is a file preview utility, by the way, previews were already possible in a limited way with photos and by choosing save preview in the parent application's save box)

2. As for Spotlight search text boxes in the top right-hand corner being like Vista's I have the following points: search boxes in the top, right-hand corner of windows were in Mac OS X since Jaguar 10.2; indexed-based searching of meta data was in Mac OS since OS 9 with Sherlock; Smart Folders (or Live Search Folders) existed in Mac OS since OS 9 when users could save their Sherlock Searches and criteria.

3. I don't see how Time Machine and Shadow Copy can be the same. Shadow Copy sounds like a tool that takes snapshots of the disk directory like System Restore points (it probably is System Restore by another name)

4. Users could already set photos as their desktop backgrounds since the early days of Mac OS 8, in fact, OS 8 came with some nifty desktop photos of places around the world. Microsoft didn't invent photo desktop backgrounds, neither did Apple.

5. I don't see that the Windows Task Bar is translucent like the Mac OS menu bar (perhaps something Redmond can photocopy for Blackbomb!)

6. There is no comparison between .Mac or iChat with Windows Meeting Spaces, that's just folly!

I have to say, Mac users make me laugh. I've been around the block with computers for years. I remember being with macs when they first came out (Apple II anyone?). I have always been around both.

First off, XP was a major leap forward compared to Windows98 which was full of bugs and prone to crash a lot easier than XP did. On the flip side, OSX was a drasticly more pleasing OS than OS 8 or 9 could have ever hoped to have been.

Secondly, I have to let you all know, I own a Mac Pro and I own several PCs. My Mac has been sitting in a corner of my living room since last year in December. Why? Vista my friends is SO much nicer than Mac OS could hope to be. First off, I've heard so many people say that they don't like Vista simply because it's Microsoft, or beacause their friend who recently bought a new laptop from Best Buy that has a Celeron and 512 megs of RAM and it's so slow. DUH people, Vista does require a bit more juice to run, but like I just read in a recent article, even computers from a few years ago can run vista with all it's bells and wistles just fine. This is not a Microsoft problem, it's stupid manufacturers who in order to crub their costs and raise their profit margin, cut corners and deliver a product that is incapable of running Vista well at all. My Dell laptop that has a Pentium M 1.8, 1 gig of ram, and a ATI 9600 128 MB Ram Video card runs vista like a champ.

Next thing, does Vista have security holes? Yes. Of course it does. Can any of you make an OS as nice as Vista with the bajilions of lines of code and not have holes? Does Mac OS have holes as well? Most definately YES it does. Why does it seem then that Mac OS doesn't ever get viruses? BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T CARE! Who is going to write a virus for a Mac if there are at least 90% or more Windows users out there? Who are you really going to want to affect? Unless you hate macs that badly, I doubt you'll write a virus for Mac OS X. One more thing, and I'll move on, does the UAC (User acount control) bug you in the beginning? At first yes, but it's not as bad as the whole world makes it out to be. It doesn't ask you for permision to "go to the bathroom" or "to blow your nose" as some have let on. It only asks when it needs to, and I'm glad it does. I feel a lot more secure with Vista than I do with Mac OS X.

While Mac OS is a very stable OS (I'll give it that), it has crashed on me MORE THAN ONCE since I've owned it. In fact, it's crashed just about as much as my PC. That aside, why does it supposedly run so stable? Well, Mac OS is built and designed to run on only certain sets of hardware, while Windows is designed to run on every hardware configuration imaginable. Billions and billions of hardware configurations. The fact that Vista runs as nice as it does should turn a few heads.

Speaking of hardware, I can build a performance PC BETTER and CHEAPER than I can with a Mac. Why? Because I have to use whatever they have designed their OS to run on even though they now use the same hardware as PCs (intel procs, intel motherboards, etc). My PC would KILL a Mac Pro where it counted. How many gamers out there are going to chose a $2,500 MAC when for half the cost they can get an equivolent or in some cases BETTER PC. Price wise, PCs just make sense.

All in all, my Vista experience has been better than with Mac OS X. Little or no software written for it that appeals to me. Crappy warranty. Crappy customer service. Crappy prices. Crappy proprietary hardware configs that can hardly be modified.

I've had Vista since it came out in January. Vista, in my opinion, is a far better OS than Mac OS is today or could ever hope to be with 10.5. I don't hate Macs, but let's be reasonable. Please.

troopa :

i really like vista over XP,but there are too many little things that make me lose my nerves, and all those shortcuts that are supposed to help are just making things more complicated,OSX is much better OS right now
