Since Microsoft opened the Windows Vista Beta 2 floodgates, wannabe testers have been pouring in. Over on The Hive, Microsoft's Windows community hub site, users had placed more than 18,000 Web orders for the Vista Beta 2 DVDs as of 10 p.m. on June 8. (We tried to place an order via the Web with no luck: We couldn't get the order site to work properly with either FireFox or Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2. Oh well.) There are reports across the Web of super-slow download times for those attempting to grab the Beta 2 bits via download. Many were clamoring/hoping/praying for BitTorrent-able Beta 2 releases to materialize soon. Microsoft has said it is hoping to get Beta 2 into the hands of 2 million testers.

I was able to download Beta 2. That's not the problem. The problem is that in this build there are no generic drivers for my 3COM 3C996B network card. This is a very common card, and it has been around now for over five years!I don't understand why it won't work now - it worked fine in earlier releases of Longhorn and Vista. To make things worse, I am unable to find a driver for it anywhere on the Internet. Even 3Com doesn't have one.As a result, I am forced to not use Vista beta 2. Without network connectivity, it just doesn't make sense to try to use it.I think that Microsoft should put a focus on NIC drivers for their Vista releases. Not doing so causes people like me to "trash" otherwise "good?" beta software.Joey PowellSoftware Engineer SrLockheed Martin
