Windows Mobile Advertises Someplace

I must not get out enough, because yesterday I stumbled on some interesting Windows Mobile advertising—and in a surprisingly obvious place.

The time: 4:40 p.m. PST. The place: San Jose airport. I had spent the day at Adobe, where I taped a couple of podcasts and spoke to a group of sales people about Microsoft. There was plenty of interest in Microsoft, as a competitor and partner.

My flight wouldn't leave for another 90 minutes, so I went exploring down another set of gates. A glass walkway separated two portions of the terminal. There on the glass, I saw several large Windows Mobile advertisements. One could call the ads clutter, because they so obscured the view from the glass-enclosed walkway. But there wasn't much to see but parked airport vehicles. Microsoft had done the Northern California airport a favor by blocking the view.

My first reaction was, "Huh?" What a strange place to put enormous ads for Windows Mobile. But then the "Oh, yeah" set in. The locale made a helluva lot of sense.

Windows Mobile is about what? It's about connectivity, anytime and any place. The place where business globetrotters feel their disconnectedness is when traveling. Those lucky sods with a Blackberry or Windows Mobile device—even someone with an iPhone—could get e-mail or surf the Web. For the lonely other travelers without these devices, Microsoft has an answer. The ads emphasize mobile e-mail, the Web and local search.

By the way, the pictures above aren't blurry. The ads were kind of 3D and so the letters mirrored twice or three times depending on the angle. I snapped the images in poor conditions (as in dusk, so light against darkened windows) with my Nokia N95 cell phone.

Microsoft rebrands PlaysForSure

http://www.techspot.com/news/28224-microsoft-rebrands-playsforsure.html

Quotes from the link:

"Now, Microsoft has added even more confusion to the DRM ecosystem by changing the PlaysForSure branding to “Certified for Windows Vista.” The obvious problem here is that PlaysForSure works not only on Vista but on XP too. On top of that, plenty of things – including Microsoft’s Zune – are “Certified for Windows Vista” but not necessary compatible with PlaysForSure. Talk about confusing the ordinary consumer."

Microsoft to test Windows XP for '$100 laptop'

http://www.komotv.com/news/microsoft/12213716.html

Quotes from the link:

"James Utzschneider, a general manager in Microsoft's Unlimited Potential group, said Windows XP for the XO won't be ready for widespread use until at least the second half of 2008. And, he said, technical hurdles were only part of the reason.

"It's been a fast-moving target for us to design towards," he said. "We only had a handful of machines in the hands of our engineers in the last year. That, and fact they were still making hardware changes as recently as August, it slowed us down."
