Microsoft executive Mike Nash, currently the corporate vice president for Windows Platform Strategy, will leave the company within the next couple of weeks. Nash spent 19 years at Microsoft, and his departure is not the first among Windows executives in 2010 -- perhaps indicative of a coming brain-drain for the operating systems division.

Microsoft issued a patch for Microsoft Word that may allow it to sidestep a court order to stop selling the program by Jan. 11, 2010. Microsoft had been sued by Toronto-based i4i over Word's alleged infringement of the latter's custom XML patent, and its most recent appeal was rejected on Dec. 22 by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Microsoft plans on continuing its battle against i4i, and still faces fines of $290 million leveled in the original verdict.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ordered Microsoft to stop selling Word by Jan. 11, as part of upholding the original verdict in a patent-infringement case filed against Microsoft by small Toronto-based company i4i. That verdict also required Microsoft to pay nearly $300 million in fines. Microsoft's options at this juncture include settling out of court or attempting to recode Word in order to sidestep the alleged patent violation.

Slides purporting to be from Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles hinted that Windows 8 could be released in 2012. This is the second time in as many months that Windows 8 rumors have abounded, but Microsoft Watch is starting to think that the "source" for the first spate of rumors in October may not actually exist.
