Xboxes Used to Reward Open-Source Developers

If you still think open-source developers shun and abhor anything that comes from Microsoft, think again.

It appears that these developers have a penchant for all things electronic, with Microsoft Xboxes topping that list.

That fact has even taken some longtime community members, like Stormy Peters, an original founder of Hewlett-Packard's Open Source Program Office and currently the director of project management at OpenLogic, by surprise.

Seems that there is a growing trend among open-source companies, including OpenLogic—which supplies software and services that allow enterprises to create and manage their own integrated, commercial-grade open-source environments—and wireless e-mail company Funambol, to reward developers who work with them with either hard cash or electronic goods like Microsoft Xboxes and Sony PlayStations.

OpenLogic has developed a points-based system that can be traded for cash, electronic goods or even donated, while Funambol has introduced three cash or electronics reward programs to engage its community, get their mindshare and work more closely with them.

Both companies say they plan many more such incentive programs.

Hello,

I have owned my Xbox 360 since it first came out. I have recently started to have some problems with the Xbox360 and attempted to contact the support center (800-469-9269). I spoke with them about my system and informed them that even though I inserted a disk the system would inform me to open the tray, I would open then close the tray and still the system would not read the game. He began to walk me through some of the trouble shooting steps, once he realized that I did all of the troubleshooting suggestion that they list on the Xbox360 site he kept placing me on hold for 5-8 min. at a time. He then explained to me that since I tried everything I would have to send the consol away to have it repaired, I simply asked him for the necessary information and he informed me that he would have to place me on hold once more for about two minutes. Finally after being on hold for nearly 15min I was connected to another member of the Microsoft Service Center, who informed me that I was accidentally transferred to an area not familiar with the XBOX 360. After explaining what had happened she informed me that she would transfer me to an appropriate person to resolve my problem. Again I was on hold for about 15 min., I then decide to hang up and call back, I then asked to speak with a supervisor and I was placed on hold for another 15 min.
They never gave me a confirmation number, but the do have my name, phone number, and mailing address on file. This is ridiculous, the system itself cost me more than $300 when it first came out, not to mention the games that I bought, and I am unable to get assistance when I need it. I have never dropped the consol or abused it in anyway and it simply has something wrong with it that I would like fixed!

The reason I am explaining all of this to you is that Christmas time is coming and I do not want to see parents rushing out to go and buy this game system for their kids, because if they do and something goes wrong with it that is it, there is little or no help on Microsoft’s end. I have no problem with the fact that they outsource there jobs but please find people that are capable of assisting your customers in a timely and courteous manner.
