Bill Gates is no longer the world's richest man, according to the 2010 Forbes list of the world's billionaires, which puts the former Microsoft CEO in second place behind Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim Helu. The difference between the two men is not substantial by billionaire standards, though, and Gates publicly seems more concerned about his philanthropy work.

Soon after launching a Twitter feed and restarting his Facebook site, former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates used both social media platforms to announce Gates Notes, a Website devoted to exploring, among other things, his philanthropic endeavors and current areas of intellectual exploration. The site chooses to focus on philanthropy, with little mention of any business endeavors or Microsoft.

Microsoft apologized for switching the race of a character in a marketing image on its Polish Web site. In addition to the fallout over a poor Photoshop job, Microsoft also finds itself the target of the Free Software Foundation, which has launched a campaign portraying Windows 7 as a threat to businesses.

Microsoft's Zune HD device will follow in the footsteps of Apple's iPod Touch, with a touch-screen and video capability. However, Microsoft is betting that the device's lower price point, recently leaked on Amazon.com, will give it enough of an advantage to take share away from the market leader. Microsoft has already trumpeted success in its "Laptop Hunter" ads that tout the relative inexpensiveness of Windows PCs compared with Macs.

Yes, Microsoft is serious about this. A retail foray requires an infrastructure commitment that suggests Microsoft will make a sustained effort to penetrate the market.

Despite signs that its "Laptop Hunter" ad campaign could be having a positive effect, Microsoft decided to edit the ads after Apple complained that the TV spots did not accurately reflect pricing for Macs. The ad campaign plays on customers' concerns about the relative price of Macs versus PCs in a recessionary environment, and is part of Microsoft's more aggressive stance against Apple and other competitors as it seeks to solidify or gain market share.
