Heading Off Longhorn Antitrust Suits at the Pass?

From Microsoft Watch: Thursday marked the first of what looks to be a number of "briefings" attended by Microsoft and representatives of the U.S. Department of Justice on the topic of Longhorn. The DOJ and state governments who sued Microsoft for antitrust violations are charged with making sure that the next version of Windows doesn't violate any antitrust guidelines. The compliance committee (not to mention Microsoft) want to head off potential antitrust suits against Longhorn at the pass.

I look at it as very smart of them to get a good jump on the the anti-trust issues which could come up. It is good for both MS and the DOJ which will give them time to study the system.

In understanding the average computer user and how little they keep up on the issues it is going to be more difficult for them to make sure they have all the parts with a system built upon modules. Then again it is going to be tough for them to keep up on which parts they can have. An example would be how many average users know about the great spyware product MS has out for free. Things like where to get it and how to set it up. The beauty in many respects MS brings is integration of all the components. Needless to say I am assuming MS will not be allowed to bundle the Spyware product and the new AntiVirus solution they have coming.

In the end I understand it is all about fair and competitive environments and I do like that about the DOJ getting involved. Yet, in the case of the OS integrated components make it easy for the average Joe.
