Microsoft Opens the Door on 'Janus'
|
On Monday, Microsoft went public with the feature set for its long-awaited, next-gen DRM technology, code-named "Janus." Janus extends Microsoft's Windows Media DRM scheme to portable devices and is tailored to restrict subscription-based music and video content. The code name couldn't be more apt, as Janus is the Roman god in charge of "gates, doors, beginnings, endings and doorways." |

If the Sasser worm patch disabled "Open Link in New Window" in IE, here's a fix for that. It did to me.
Fix was found as as part of a Google Answer!

Janus was a two faced god.
The scary part of this DRM is totally legal uses of the content can be stopped. Such as send video out of your graphic card to display on TV or stopping your computer based DVR from recording certain shows for later viewing, erasing files it considers stolen.
One the one side it is a godsend for content providers on the other side even more user control is lost....hence the perfect two faced god.
Also if these hooks into the OS are as open to hacking as WindowsXP has been then who knows what waits in store. A virus that shuts down all video, stops your CD from recording or even worse, erasing files.
