MSN Looks to Subscription Gaming for New Revenues

MSN is looking to grow revenues in areas beyond online advertising by adding new subscription services to its repertoire.

Microsoft's online subsidiary has supplemented its handful of existing subscription-based services with four, new, paid subscription games, the company announced on Thursday.

MSN is launching the new games, branded under "MSN Instant Games Clubhouse," simultaneously with MSN Messenger 6.2, a minor release of its instant-messaging platform. The MSN online games have no connection with Microsoft's Xbox Live games or gaming service, company officials noted.

On Thursday, as part of its fiscal 2004 third quarter earnings announcement, Microsoft said that MSN revenues grew to $591 million, up 16 percent from its FY 2003 Q3 level. The MSN business unit was buoyed largely by MSN advertising revenue, which grew 43 percent during the quarter.

The four new games which MSN expects to roll out by Friday — Wheel of Fortune, Upwords (a word game), Bankshot Billiards (online pool) and MSN Instant Games Chess — were developed jointly by Microsoft and partners. Customers need MSN Messenger 6.1 or 6.2 to play the new games. The games can be played over dial-up or broadband by single users or "head-to-head" between two individuals.

The new paid games supplement the handful of free games that MSN introduced with MSN Messenger 6.0. These include: Bejeweled, Checkers, Cubis, Hexic, Minesweeper Flags, Mozaki Blocks and Solitaire Showdown.

There are currently 120 million MSN Messenger customers worldwide, said Brooke Richardson MSN product manager.

"We're trying to bring advanced subscription services to market on top of the free services we currently offer and to monetize these customers," she added.

MSN currently offers a handful of paid subscription products. The latest versions of MSN — MSN Premium and MSN Plus — run on top of Internet service offerings from Microsoft and third-party providers and are both considered "subscription services." Other current MSN subscription products include the four Hotmail Premium bundles, MSN personal domains and MSN radio services. MSN is expected to launch an MSN Music subscription service later this year.

MSN also is due to launch a new search service later this year. Microsoft is expected to offer MSN Search for free, at least when it first launches, to compete with the freely available Google and Yahoo search facilities.

MSN 6.2 is a "refinement release," Richardson said. It includes a few minor new features, such as the ability to view mobile MSN buddies (those using cell phones and/or MSN Direct watches). The 6.2 release also allows customers to autocorrect in their text boxes when they do thing such as inadvertently add emoticons to messages, Richardson explained.

Microsoft is offering MSN customers a 14-day free trial of its four new subscription games. After that, the Wheel of Fortune, Bankshot Billiards and Upwords games will cost $4.99 a month or $14.99 per year. MSN Instant Games Chess will cost $3.99 per month or $9.99 per year.

Linda Thompson :

I have been trying to cancel my membership with MSN Games Clubhouse. When I go to the part that says TO CANCEL SUBSCRIPTION, the page shows error. I have been trying for two months. Also I only signed up for one month and they keep charging me every month. If I has wanted more than one month I would have signed up for a year. It would have been alot cheaper. PLEASE contact me or I am going to have to cancel my credit card just to cancel this subcription. This is unbelievable that it is so hard to cancel this.

Thank you,

Linda Thompson

I am having the same problem and so are others. Microsoft does not want you to cancel so they make it nearly impossible for you to do so by giving you misleading information on the cancellation process. When I go to billing.microsoft.com per the susbcription renewal email, then click on the link to cancel the subscription, it just pops up a help box with about 10 methids for cancelling, and all of those links just take me in circles. No phone number and no way to cancel. It's crazy. I've alerted American Express to their tactics and am waiting to see if they attempt to charge me again. If they do, I'll sue for damages.

I also have been trying to cancel MSN Games Clubhouse Bundle. Microsoft has made it impossible so to do. So be warned. Once you sign up, their cancellation policy is designed not you let you.............and you keep being charged .
Thus far after 7 weeks, I'm having to resort to my credit card ' Retailer Disputes Department'

Bill Gates short of a few quid?

I am having the exact same problem. Im very frustrated with not beinmg able to cancel. I also have notified my credit card and am waiting to see what happens when they try to take the money out on June 14th.I wish I knew why they want to make this cancellation so difficult.

Peter :

Tried every avenue to cancel for over a week now.
THERE IS NO WAY MICROSOFT ALLOW YOU TO CANCEL
MSN CLUBHOUSE GAMES BUNDLE!
They state 'renewable or cancellable yearly'
Don't you believe it. Absolutely impossible to cancel.
Only way it seems,is to report as 'Bad Retailer' to your credit card company.
THIS IS A SCAM!

Frank KWOK :

This is definitely a scam. Shame on Bill Gates!

In January this year, I subscribed to a chess game in MSN Games Clubhouse for an annual fee of HK$38.99. I got a confirmation email saying that the charge is an annual fee. But then Microsoft just keeps charging me monthly for the same amount.

I had not paid much attention to it because it is such a small amount. But now I can see that many people have been scammed in a similar fashion. Considering the number of users worldwide, Microsoft is making a lot of money this way. This is highway robbery!

Like every one else here, I've been taken in circles when I tried to resolve the issue following the weblinks provided at their sites.

I'm concelling my credit card used for the subscription. I suspect the credit companies are turning a blind eye to this because it's simply more business for them.

I'm going to write to the local newspaper to expose this. Please do the same with your local media. Microsoft is definitely counting on us not doing anything about it. Let's prove them wrong.

I am having the same problem in trying to cancel my MSN Games Clubhouse Bundle. I agree with the comments. Microsoft is holding us hostage with unsavory business practises. I tried the telephone number given on "How do I cancel my account" and contacted an agent who deals with MSN Direct. He tried to point me in the right direction which was back to the site I came from. Cancelling the applicable credit card appears to be the only way out of Microsoft's clutches.

Hayley Warren :

I have been trying to cancel my Clubhouse subscription for the past year and I SO angry at the formulaic emails I have received which has just sent me around in circles. I can't get the phone number to work either. Surely this kind of corporate theft can't be legal?? I want to cancel it and I am just ignored!

Diane Patterson :

I too have had this problem and cannot get the account cancelled. I have felt like a dog chasing my tail in a circle trying to cancel this service. It is a huge scam!

I used the number above 1-866-672-4551 and spoke to someone to cancel. I JUST received a cancellation notice as well via email!

Thank you ANN for this phone number!!

Peter :

Finally, finally,FINALLY, I got an e-mail from MSN Games to say 'Greetings your subscription has been cancelled',only after I had reported them as 'bad/rogue retailer' to my Credit Card company
who were very helpful and only too aware of this con.
Lying, scamming, cheating bastards - beware, stay well clear!

Ann :

your welcome. we enjoyed the games, but what msn is doing is wrong. it shouldnt be this hard to cancel a subscription and frustrate customers. very bad business. the number 1-866-672-4551 is billing and it works call and cancel.

ann :

This mail is confirmation that your subscription to MSN Games Clubhouse Bundle has been cancelled on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!! just to show that the billing number works finally after 2 years!!

Kathy :

Thank you! I called the number and was finally able to cancel.

Hattie :

I have been going through the samething as everyone else on this post. I finally got mine cancelled as well by calling 866-672-4552. We need to stick together and report our side of the story to the Better Business Bureau. I just did it 2 minutes ago. The list of complaints by the BBB on MSN Games Clubhouse is unbelieveable, so we are not alone on this. This is the information you will need to start the complaint on www.bbb.com. The address you will type in is Microsoft Corporation, One Microsoft Way, Redmond, Washington 98052. The phone number you will need to type in is 425-882-8080. Follow the prompts and when you come to a page titled: Step 1 : Verify the nature of your Complaint, it will list 5 questions. Answer no to all 5 and click submit and then you will be able to type in your complaint. I hope together, a positive change will come from all of this.

Beth Hopkins :

Thank you to all who posted in this thread with the Microsoft billing phone number. The cancellation went smoothly and immediately updated as expired on the billing website. I don't know why Microsoft feels they need to hide this information, but the representative was very courteous and helpful, so please don't take out your frustration on them. This problem is higher up on the Microsoft food chain. Microsoft does need reported to make their billing contact information more transparent.

Hattie :

Just an update. Today I received a refund directly into my bank account from MSN Games. A rep called one day after my complaint and advised that a refund was on its way.

Alexander :

I cancelled through http://zone.msn.com/en/support/billing/clubhousehelp.html

You don't have to make any calls or such, just hit 'cancel' and it's done!

Jason :

I tried to cancel through the URL listed in the last comment... it told me I wasn't subscribed to any services. My Billing and Account Management page on billing.microsoft.com told me I was subscribed to "MSN Games Clubhouse Bundle" and my credit card has been charged over the past few years for the service.

It took me over 2 years to cancel this service. I canceled all my subscription services with Microsoft and requested my credit card to be removed from my account. I will not be providing Microsoft with my credit card ever again because of this fiasco.

I will give the XBox support staff credit for being helpful, but the problem reaches higher and Microsoft needs to take care of their customers better. It is unacceptable to not provide any accurate information (or miss-information) about how to cancel a subscription service.

A big THANK YOU to the person that posted the number to contact MSN Games.

jensonfudge :

I also canceled after two years of trying thanks to the post by Alexander above.

http://zone.msn.com/en/support/billing/clubhousehelp.html and press cancel it really works!

JR :

There is no Cancel link on this page:

http://zone.msn.com/en/support/billing/clubhousehelp.html

Maybe there was, but it's not there now. It's mind-boggling that Microsoft of all companies has such a scam making it nearly impossible to cancel a subscription.

Mandy :

Just an update for you all... the telephone number 1-866-672-4551 DOES still work to cancel this service. It was a 5 minute phone call and all I needed was the email address that was on the account and the last 4 digits of the card number being charged. =) Thanks for the number, Ann!
