Remember Microsoft's agreement to pay $1.1 billion to the state of California to settle antitrust claims? As part of that settlement, Microsoft threw in the provision that it would provide its software to California schools at no charge. The seeming goodwill gesture was challenged by Apple, which makes about a fifth of its money from educational sales. Result? On Thursday, the school provision was dropped. |
