Even fully patched Windows XP Service Pack 2 systems
aren't immune from rootkit infestation. In fact, more than 20 percent of all malware removed from Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2) systems are stealth rootkits, according to Microsoft. Besides rootkits, malware that uses social engineering techniques (such as rogue attachments and instant-messaging links) is also infiltrating even XP SP2 users' machines, Microsoft officials said.
