Winding Your Way Through the SP2 Distribution Maze

Now that Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is out, it's on to the next challenge: Figuring out the best way to get users upgraded (or not, in certain cases). Microsoft plans to begin pushing SP2 out to users running XP via Automatic Update (AU) starting on August 16. But for corporations who aren't ready to have the update deployed en masse, Microsoft has had to post a downloadable toolkit that blocks AU from automatically delivering SP2 onto customers' machines. For users with multiple machines, Microsoft is advising they download the network installer for SP2 before downloading the service pack. Microsoft is suggesting that individuals with a single machine should hold off downloading for now.
