Windows XP SP3 Reaches RC2
|
News Brief. Today, Microsoft quietly released Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 to the masses. SP3 means a heck of a lot more than Vista SP1. |
Microsoft is taking a similar testing tactic as with Vista SP1: Make a crucial release candidate broadly available for testing Windows Update delivery. Microsoft tested SP1 Windows Update delivery in mid-January. The Vista update released to manufacturing a few weeks later.
The RC2 Windows Update test signifies that Microsoft is near the final testing stages for Service Pack 3. Microsoft is expected to make Vista SP1 broadly available sometime in March. It's reasonable to presume that SP3's release is imminent, perhaps around the time of SP1, or even sooner. I'm expecting sooner rather than later, unless there are last-minute glitches.
Windows Server 2008's big launch is next Thursday. Microsoft has released a bunch of service packs so that major products are prepared for new server software. SP3 is part of the process for syncing up XP for Windows Server 2008. In ideal circumstances, Microsoft should release XP SP3 no later than Feb. 27.
While there has been big noise about Vista SP1, XP SP3 is much more important to many more enterprises. Windows XP is everywhere, and Vista is in just a few places, comparatively. I still expect XP SP3 to impede Vista deployments, seeing as how many more enterprises run the older Windows version.

"unless there are last-minute glitches."
JOE DUDE, don't jinx them! These guys are having a hard enough time. Vista sucks buckets. Now with this latest Vista SP1 screwup is just going to put a bullet in the adoption plan. Everybody was happy enough with XP and everybody's just going to have just that much more reason to stick with it and not buy Vista.
Can't work on the internet. Can't show their big time Ozzie goodies. Can't compete with Google. Can't climb on top of Yahoo. Can't Can't Can't. And here you are saying "unless there are last-minute glitches." and sure enough there's BOUND to be a screwup with XP now.
I can see the Microsoft XP team now fumbling around with their shoelaces like Tanya Harding... they're wondering whose kneecap they're going to have to whack next just to stay in the Olympics.

Can someone please tell me what "sucks" about Vista. I have been running it for over a year with no major problems. Please, just 1 legit reason.

I have been unimpressed by the broken Vista File Sharing Network Wizard. I still had to go in and manually edit permissions using explorer, even though I specifically answered yes to the group everyone in the wizard! A broken wizard should not have left beta. I welcome SP1 with open arms.

Al:
It's slow. There's simply no excuse for how slow it is and you can trace that slowness back to WPF.
How's that for suck?
Posted by pedro panza | February 20, 2008 9:25 AM
Al - here's you're one reason:
It was slow, even on my new Alienware laptop. I used it for 3 months, and had many other "legit" reasons to drop it like the proverbial hot potato.
Ok?

I have an old AMD 1.4 with 2GBs of ram that runs better with Vista Ultimate than it did with XP/SP2. My only issue with the machine was the sound drivers before they produced them. The boot up and opening applications seems to come up much more smoothly than it did with XP. My only slowness issue would be copying larger files between my other machines across the network. For Joe it sounds like you have a Dell knock-off loaded with all that bloat ware that all the vendors supply you with. Get rid of that crap and Vista works great for me.

How did this turn into a Vista bashing page?
Posted by Doug | February 20, 2008 11:31 AM
Al - I agree with you. I have been running Vista for about a year on a Dell XPS that is several years old (I think I bought it in 2005) and have had no issues other than the first nVidia drivers weren't very good. That has not been an issue for a long time now.
I can't speak for anyone else, but Vista works great for me.

Yes, and Vista x64 SP1 is working like gang-busters on my machine, but then again, this isn't an ordinary machine, and I do extraordinary things.
I love Ubuntu and wished it did more (Ubuntu x64).

I don't have any major problems with Vista, and I've been using it since November 2006. I installed it on an Intel Pentium-M 2.GHZ w/1.5GB DDR2-533 tabletpc, and a home built Intel Core2 E6600 w/2GB of DDR2-1066.
It's got some issues with slow unzips, and file copying, but nothing major or making me revert to XP.
I've yet to test the improvements in SP1.
I don't get the negative comments. I guess I'm fortunate that Vista has meet my needs - so far.

I have been running Vista and Vista only (other than some experiments with 2008 Server) on my self-build since March 2007. It is a SFF, so I went with lower power consuming parts. Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 2.0GHz RAM: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) GRAPHICS: SAPPHIRE 100142L Radeon X1300 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card
I have never had a problem with Vista whatsoever. It has been rock solid. All my peripherals, printers, scanner, external drives, cameras, work perfect It has run like a charm and it seems to run fast.
My only complaint has been that I don't see what is better about it. I like the search bar in the start menu and control panel, they do help me find stuff easier, but that is all.
Well, today, due to a major malfunction, which was my fault for playing with my system, I had to install XP to run an old program. OMG! My system runs so lightning fast on XP, I felt like I just purchased a brand-new top-of-the-line PC! ANYTHING I click comes up instantaneously. I am going to have to play around with this awhile. I need to load all my software on it and see how it all runs.

in eastern Europe countries which are more poor then usa or major Europe countries, people don't have good enough computers and they use at least three year older computers then americans ant etc.
you say for vista it is not necessary to have good pc, but could you tell me how to run vista on amd 1800+ with even 2gb of ram ddr400. and integrated video card ? :)

@pashka
If you really do not want to run Linux, and I am assuming you do not, I would definitely recommend Windows XP over Windows Vista. Read my post above. XP is noticeably faster even on my system with a dual core processor and PCI-Express 16X video card. XP absolutely rocks on my PC. I don't think you would get anything out of Vista that you will get out of XP. If you want to update the look of Windows XP, I do not suggest the so-called "Vista Transformation" software packages. They look cool and even have an aero effect and the flip 3D, but it brought my laptop to its knees, just like the real Vista. For an updated look, I do suggest a simple theme called "Royale Noir". It is a black/grey theme based on Media Center Edition's Royale Energy theme. You can get it from Softpedia: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Themes/Royale-Noir-Theme.shtml
I use it on my laptop and it looks great and runs great.

When XP came out it had much better features than Win98, it was better all around. When Vista came out, it was a mistake!, People who love microsoft kept looking for excuses to think that Vista is "ok", no no, Why would you keep Vista instead of XP?, looks?, there's no GOOD reason. Xp is still better. Functionality and speed beats looks and slowness.
And for the people who say "Vista is good what are you talking about", you guys probably just check email and run word.

I'm not going to join in on the Vista bashing.
I'm just happy to have a new baseline for XP installations. Having to install almost 100 patches was starting to get old. The fact that SP3 allegedly speeds things up a little bit is nice bonus.

I love Vista and have had no problems yet. Vista is like XP you have to turn off all the junk that you do not need. It will use more ram also, xp can only use 3.5 gigs of ram were vista will read it all. With Vista 64 I can use 8 gigs of DD3 pc3-12800 1600mhz, No OS is good out of the box you have to set it up for what you do. I buid gamers and this PC will run away from any Store PC. Alienware is no match and way overpriced.
