XP SP3 Won't Be Coming Today
|
News Brief. Doesn't this just suck. Windows XP Service Pack 3 won't be available for mass download today after all. |
And those early birds that got the worm may find it tainted by polluted ground water.
I just got e-mail from Microsoft's PR about XP SP3's release-to-Web delay. According to the e-mail:
"In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Microsoft Dynamics RMS is a retail chain management solution for small and midsize customers. In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center."
The e-mail explains that Microsoft plans "to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Download Center."
So, there are a few things going on here simultaneously:
- XP SP3 won't be immediately available to everyone.
- Vista Service Pack 1 also is incompatible with Dynamics RMS.
- Microsoft will also block some Vista SP1 downloads.
- Some Dynamics RMS customers that got XP SP3 last week or already have deployed Vista SP1 are frakked.
- Dynamics customers that haven't deployed either service pack shouldn't.
- Microsoft delayed an important update for compatibility problems affecting a small subset of customers (you can view that as being customer-focused or as poor planning; I'll say the former).
The Microsoft PR e-mail didn't say when XP SP3 would be available: "The fix is currently in testing and will be available as soon as that process is complete." Hopefully, the fix will be to Dynamics RMS, rather than to either service pack, which some enterprises would have to requalify.
For more information or to bitch about the delay, users can go to Microsoft's TechNet Forum.

"You can view that as customer focused or poor planning; I'll say the former"
Given those choices, you're clearly correct.
If the choice were between CF and poor testing, however...

Well that goes to all those who say a fully patched Windows system is the same as the latest service pack install. Clearly it is not!
If "SP-X"=="fully patched" then this issue would have been seen (and hopefully solved) long ago.

"XP SP3 won't be immediately available to everyone."
It's immediately available to everyone via a direct download. Just not via Windows Update.

Right now, WinXP SP3 is only available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers.
I downloaded the 544 MB ISO today through my MSDN subscription. I'm installing it tonight on my WinXP MCE laptop and my home "gaming" machine. I'll be sure to report any BSOD's experienced.
Home=Windows XP
Work=Vista

i was wondering why it wasn't coming up on Microsoft Update...

I was able to remotely install SP3 on my Home Network (3 PC's using Logmein)from work. After reboot, nothing new. Not as dramatic as SP2. With that and Vista SP1. No issues on either installation. But I will upgrade soon Vista SP1 since it runs much faster than my XP machines.

That's what happens....
When you THINK that you're "SO SMART", you can release an update of this scope without a proper Release Candidate-- And not get bitten in the ass.
Well, the teeth marks aren't too enormous big this time. Just one Microsoft app tripping over the other....
"Testers? We don't need no stinkin' testers! PAYING CUSTOMERS do that job for free, and we'll just make them keep paying, they don't have the brains to go somewhere else :))"

Got it from Woody's link and installed it on one of my XP PCs. No Trauma. Just about as fast as Windows ME now.

When I get the last stable patch for XP SP3 I am going to freeze my desktop build of it for a while. They are going to have to pry it from my cold dead fingers to get XP away from me. If right now I had to throw XP out, I would go to Ubuntu for my home pc rather than drink the new coke they call vista.

You can just donwload it from the link that was posted above if you want it that bad.
There will be no other build or fix to the service pack itself. Microsoft has said that what is there now is the final build:
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3267850&SiteID=17
I installed it on my system with no problems at all. Then a few days later I made a cd with the SP slipstreamed in and there were no problems with that either. It even seems like things run a little faster and its nice not having to download like 90 patches anymore.
