Microsoft Makes Way for Oslo

Microsoft's new services-oriented architecture "Oslo" concept is the right step forward. But leaps and bounds will be years away, if ever.

The company announced Oslo this morning at its SOA conference in Redmond, Wash. Microsoft also made a commitment to quadruple the size of its SOA investment.

Oslo is more a concept than single technology, which Microsoft will manifest in the next versions of several products, including BizTalk Server 6. Some of the products are years away from release.

In a Directions on Microsoft report provided to the news media by Microsoft, analyst Rob Helm explained that "Oslo is still far off and represents a broader vision that might never be realized in full." That's sound advice, given the rapid pace at which the SOA market is moving.

It's fairly typical of Microsoft to lay out a years-ahead vision that dramatically changes based on consumer and partner response and market conditions. Oslo is a destination that Microsoft may or may not reach. Project Green is one recent example of big vision gone bust.

But the fundamentals make sense. Last week I spoke with Burley Kawasaki, director of Microsoft's Connected Systems Division, about Oslo. "The clock speed of business has dramatically increased, but IT boundaries persist," he said about problems getting processes across the network to the Web.

Today, an IDC press release summarized survey findings from a survey of IT managers in Asia Pacific: "Trends in service oriented architectures ... and business delivery platforms around software as a service ... suggest that IT has finally reached an impasse in its current data center delivery process.

CIOs are now looking at how server and storage blades, security for virtualization, power and cooling, and other infrastructure related issues can be resolved and turned into service elements."

Such impasses and business informational needs create opportunity for Microsoft, assuming it can reach Oslo in a timeframe meaningful to IT organizations.

"We've made BizTalk Server and BizTalk Services as the anchor for our SOA effort," Kawasaki said. Oslo will extend core BizTalk server SOA capabilities around messaging and workflow.

Richard Smith, CRM practice director at Green Beacon Solutions, explained BizTalk Server's informational role. "We see them as using BizTalk as their middleware framework. It's not all that different a concept than Oracle is talking about with Fusion."

Microsoft also plans to release a "common set of metadata repositories across a number of tools," Kawasaki said. Repository is the code name for the database technology, which likely will be closely aligned with .NET Framework 4.0. Microsoft isn't clearly saying—yet. But .NET Framework integration would be consistent with Microsoft's broader "software plus services" approach.

Helm explained that Repository "stores workflows, Web services contracts, and other components of composite applications, to aid centralized development and management."

Microsoft's broadest goal is about software development, what I'll call SOA for dummies—or perhaps for the rest of us. Microsoft wants to shift the paradigm toward modeling, which is a more visual means of developing SOA. Kawasaki likened the change to what the 1991 release of Visual Basic did for software development.

"The opportunity with Oslo is to move models front and center how people build applications, Kawasaki said. "Model-driven development is the key to delivering the faster clock speed for IT. Oslo is how you do it."

But Microsoft doesn't have momentum yet. Modeling is all about the future: Next release of BizTalk Server, forthcoming BizTalk Services, .NET Framework 4, System Center 5 and Visual Studio 10. That puts the early release horizon sometime in 2009 for Oslo technologies.

Microsoft plans to release beta software with Oslo technologies sometime next year.

ATI: Linux vs. Windows Vista
"We had no idea that ATI Linux would steal the lead from the latest Redmond operating system"
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=897&num=1
QUOTE:
"When setting out on the benchmarking for this article we had no idea that in all of the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars benchmarks, ATI Linux would steal the lead from the latest Redmond operating system. Doom 3 had also performed very well under Linux with the latest ATI driver release. Being surprised by this, we are now going to be performing a much larger cross-platform comparison with multiple ATI Radeon graphics cards and we'll likely run the same set of tests on the NVIDIA side. We'll also throw Windows XP into the mix along with more games/benchmarks. Prior to the introduction of the fglrx 8.41 and 8.42 display drivers, seeing these results would have been impossible. The ATI Radeon HD 2900XT is proving to be quite a splendid graphics card offering for Linux users -- along with the forthcoming official open-source support."

Something funny about the concentrated effort to quiet the VCSY conversation on other boards and the deletion of almost every link to the VCSY/Microsoft lawsuit on the internet.
(Why is everyone else downplaying it?)

Joe has been understanding, although the readers here will go back to reread all my posts later, and they'll wonder how they missed the boat.
VCSY is under 2 cents a share, it's not rocket science, read the VCSY patents!

Too bad for Linux that there isn't that many games that actually run under Linux. ATI graphics cards or not !!
As Linux aka Unix (an OS for servers) was never designed to play GAMES on.

I-Man
Whenever you write your long, long, long posts I never read them, because of just that, they are too long !!
Besides I am certain that everyone knows about your subject Vertical Computer Systems by now and are TOTALLY bored with it.
Some people don't like my posts but at least I try to write on the subject of the article unlike you.

I-Man :

Neil,

I can write about VCSY because i'm just a shareholder of the company who is not bound by a Non-Disclosure-Agreement like so many others.

Let me give you a clue here, the link to the VCSY/Microsoft lawsuit was removed recently from the VCSY/Yahoo site(why?) and almost everywhere else on the internet.

http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=VCSY.OB
also Yahoo will no longer let the above link paste on their messageboards(why?)

Many messageboard posters on the VCSY messageboards try to deceive readers(why?)

You'll see, the time is coming when the readers here will wonder how they missed it. Be prepared to go back and read all my previous posts.

I-Man :

Joe, can you be so kind as to open a topic on the VCSY/Microsoft lawsuit that I can use to stay on topic with? If you read my posts you should understand how very valuable VCSY's patents could be to the future of Microsoft one way or the other. Thanks!

(This msg. is a reply to 201641 by DC-Steve.)

DC-Steve the point beach was making was that when you first started posting about VCSY the first thing you did was to say it is a scam. Now you changed your tune and you always come here talking about how you haven't done anything bad. I think what you're doing is trying to make sure you don't get caught up with the likes of tepe and rheemer and kantuc and pops who slam VCSY as hard as they can every chance they get.

john-carlton is somebody from the Microsoft board that's mad because they can't get rid of the answers for the four criteria for an injunction. He shows how biased he is so newbies can just disregard his posts.

But you guys are passive aggressive and you slam VCSY by trying to make the reader believe nothing is happening. Just like people that thought "Dubya" would lose because his side was "stupid". Not very stupid were they? What you forget about the Dubya supporters is that they won.

It made the other side really mad and they're still mad and they don't care what they tear up just so long as they win. It the same thing the other side did when Clinton won because they thought the Clinton supporters were stupid. It's what humans do and you and your buddies are showing that's what you're doing here.

You slammed VCSY years ago as a scam and now you're here to see if you can get even with them for proving you wrong. With VCSY WE won and you lost when you claimed VCSY is a scam.

We won and rheemer lost when he showed everybody he could delete his own posts like recy and mirror showed they could do years ago.

We won and tepe lost when he talks about being an engineer but he can't handle a discussion about the patents like a real engineer would.

We won and kantuc lost when he admitted he was mirror years ago and he bragged about the way he can lie cleverly.

We won and popjason lost when popjason showed how blind he was with everything that was showed to him that he had an agenda for being here without ever owning any VCSY shares.

We win and the other side is really mad so THAT's why you and popjason and rheemer and tepe and kantuc are here. You're here to try to convince readers to ignore VCSY and you have to make them do that until the news comes. Then those that could have had a chance to buy VCSY cheap will be mad at you but all of you will be gone because your job will be over.

To Marco;
As usual, Niel got it wrong when he commented on your comment;

Neil, Quote: " Too bad for Linux that there isn't that many games that actually run under Linux. ATI graphics cards or not !!
As Linux aka Unix (an OS for servers) was never designed to play GAMES on."
--------------------------------------------------
Our local MS Shill/Troll would like us to believe he is now an Linux expert. This being the guy that once tried Ubuntu but right away decided he did not like the brown desktop. A real try there. There are actually quite a few games that run under Linux, and even more that run under emulation. But then he just wanted to spread more FUD anyway.

For starters like in Synaptic Package manager in most Debian or Ubuntu distros for games. These are all free games as well. And check out this site; http://www.happypenguin.org/

another Neil quote; "Some people don't like my posts but at least I try to write on the subject of the article unlike you." (referring to Iman)
--------------------------------------------------
Well the first part of this sentance I am in total agreement with. The 2nd part is untrue, as Neil only writes short comments mostly attacking others, as that sentance is an prime example of.

Marco, one thing I do sort of agree with Neil on, is that Iman could do better with most of his comments and just get to the point. Even I skip over those comments mostly.

(This msg. is a reply to 201802 by stillwtr19.)

Oh NO stillwtr! How can you say something like that? DC-Steve is a fine upstanding guy that tells it like he sees it every time he gets a chance at work. That's why he posted over 700 posts against VCSY as a scam trying to drive it into the ground and break investors grips on their shares.

Then when they got delisted by somebody that got the SEC to consider VCSY on a list with a bunch of other scam companies the day after VCSY was granted the Siteflash patent DC-Steve poured on another couple hundred posts to convince everybody it was all over for VCSy and they would dry up and blow away.

Now that VCSY came back as one of the ONLY ONES to survive that SEC investigation and they did so by getting the CDC/Ross CEO fired on the same day DC-Steve wants us to think he changed his tune and VCSY is only "maybe" a scam and "might" go bankrupt and all the people that bought stock are "definitely" not as smart as him.

His posts make me sick but I'll post them as often as new readers need to see what kind of "honest" guy he is.

I don't know about you but people that have to spend more than half the time they talk telling people how "honest" they are and how they "never ever" do anything wrong are a whole lot creepy to most people. At least they are to me.

Neil :

Chips
Games that matter !!
Not your crappy Linux ones !
And as far as attacking others here chips ...you do that all the time !!
You just can't tell the truth can you !

I-Man
Joe will never write about YOUR pet subject (YOUR ONLY SUBJECT), or at least I and quite a few other people hope not !!

I-Man :

Neil,
Wouldn't you be curious is to what might come of a discussion about the VCSY and Microsoft lawsuit, because of my outlandish claims of the "power" of VCSY's patents?

I'd like to remind you that the lawsuit was removed from the VCSY/Yahoo site(strange?)
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=VCSY.OB

but it still can be found on VCSY's website:

Vertical Computer Systems, Inc. Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against Microsoft Corporation

Fort Worth, TX, April 20, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE)? Vertical Computer Systems, Inc. (OTCBB: VCSY)(www.vcsy.com) announced today that on April 18, 2007, Vertical Computer Systems, Inc. filed suit for patent infringement against Microsoft Corp. in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. VCSY claims that the Microsoft .Net System infringes U.S. Patent No. 6,826,744.

I-Man :

There was a rumor back somewhere around May/June...
(From Portuno-Yahoo/Microsoft board)
http://messages.finance.yahoo.com/Stocks_%28A_to_Z%29/Stocks_M/threadview?m=tm&bn=12004&tid=1298739&mid=1298739&tof=3&frt=2

... do you know what it was? The rumor was that Microsoft had a settlement worked out with VCSY and only needed a little more time to work things out. Thus, MSFT asked for an extra 60 days to... you know... "work things out". VCSY graciously said "sure" and MSFT took the 60 days VCSY gave them in good faith.

Well, sir, the 60 days came and went and no word of Microsoft fulfilling any agreement sooooo... here we are now about a week away from the beginning of hearings in the no-foolin'-'round Texas Federal Court and we are all wondering what's going to be said... because it DOES ALL have to be said this time around, you see?

Read the post I gave from one of the VCSY board longs detailing what the hearings ahead require of both parties. You really do need to read them (and no I won't repost the URL. You're all going to have to grow up like hawcreek and learn to be responsible for your oversights) and see what is facing MSFT.

IF MSFT started an agreement with VCSY and reneged? Whooooooweeee what a scorching screwup THAT would have been. You shareholders can only hope those 60 days extended by VCSY upon MSFT's request were because one of their lawyers was lost on a mountain top or some such delaying nonsense and not an abortive settlement.

Glub Glub.

Anyway, that was the rumor and we'll be able to tell is that was a rumor or not because at some point the legal proceedings (seeing as how they're between two public companies and all) will become public and there are plenty of VCSY long Spartaci who will be more than willing to fill up the text boxes on the net with all the juicy details... come what may.
----------------------------------------------------------------
My my my - what happens if the rumor is true? What happens to Microsoft's case if they began negotiating a settlement with VCSY and backed out of it? Were they buying time? Were they going to until they saw what it would cost? Were they going to until they found out what would have to be made public?

Either way, if they bailed out of a negotiations and especially if they bailed out of a good faith attempt by VCSY to settle... what chance do you calculate they will be able to convince the court they were always going to fight on principle?

On principle of mens rea, is what. And THAT is what the good judges will presume.

Not a good position to have going into this kind of "chances".

Chips:
Speaking of games for Linux, with the near liberation of drives for Ati and nvidia(NVIDIA 100.14.23 Linux Driver) and the use of powerful graphics card (Radeon X1950PRO, HD 2600PRO, HD 2900XT, ASUS EN8600GT OC Gear graphics card.), each day more and more
companies like Valve will liberate games for Linux.
Some example: Quake Wars
/www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2007/04/09/Linux_has_game/2
Enemy Territory, Doom3, Quake 1, 2, 3 & 4, Soldier of Fortune, Tribes 2, Unreal Tournament (1999), 2004 & 2004, America's Army..."and the list goes on. And, if your favourite game isn't listed under the section native/ported games, you still have a chance that it might be included on the huge list of games that work through (mis)called emulators, like Wine and Cedega".
This is Just the BEGINNING.
But for me, more important yet, there are the free educative Games, they are great for the children in my family.
---------------------

Speaking of Neil, I have not read his posts for a long time, since this is a complete loss of my time (because he went from being a serious shill to merely being a clown shill) Only that once in a while, I send a reminder of his condition of "Ms' employee"-so as to newbies are not cheated by him.

Neil :

Marco
Maybe if you read something I wrote you would learned that I am not involved in any way shape or form with microsoft.
