Longhorn Named Windows Server 2008
|
As expected, Microsoft has formerly named its next-generation server software Windows Server 2008. The company formerly unveiled the name at WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Conference). |
The name is no surprise, as Windows Server 2008 appeared on various Microsoft Web sites over the weekend.
"It's surprisng for us to pick something so straightforward," Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates joked during his WinHEC keynote today.
The real question is "When?" Microsoft released the first public beta of Windows Server 2008 last month. Gates said there have been 100,000 downloads of the software.
Based on Microsoft's typical nomenclature, Windows Home Server 2008 is likely on track for fairly late-year release to manufacturing and so likely broad availability sometime next year.
Today, Gates said the release would be "by the end of the year."
Microsoft's naming video is cute.

Its not a surprise that MS did not name it "Vista Server," which is what it really is. Better change the name, and hope a few more uneducated people will buy it.
Most people are onto the fact that its a dog with fleas.

40 million copies of Vista in 100 days!
That's well ahead of forecast.
This means:
- 146 million copies in 12 months
- 292 million copies in 24 months
It looks like your slow Vista sales stories was contrived to hook readers.

In the first paragraph, you said "formerly" which means "used to be". You probably meant "formally" which means "officially".
You also misspelled "surprising" in the Gates quote from the third paragraph.

Chips, its a simple reason why it was not named Vista Server, because Microsoft didn't want to confuse it with consumer and business client editions of Vista.
Imagine the tech support nightmare that would be? Its a reason why Office 12 was not christened Office Vista, because so many persons were confused with Windows XP/Office XP.
Last Vista Server does not fit the spirit of Longhorn Server (now Server 2008), straightforward and simple.
