Another Vista Activation Crack Appears

Buzz about a Windows Vista zero-day vulnerability is troubling enough (although probably overblown). Now, there appears to be a second product activation hack, this one designed to fool the activation timer into not counting down.

The activation hack is quite different from the first one, which involved setting up a Key Management Service server. Microsoft also released an update blocking a hybrid of testing and final Vista "Monster" code that could bypass product activation.

"Recently it has been reported that activation of Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system has been compromised," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement in response to a Microsoft Watch inquiry. "Microsoft is investigating this reported activation breach; however, there is no concrete evidence that this breach has been automated to the point that it is widely deployable."

The not "widely deployable" statement, while likely true, isn't denial of an actual activation breach.

I've read instructions, which I won't link to, and comments from people who successfully tried the so-called Time Stopper hack; I haven't tested it and wouldn't because of a possible security breach when applying a downloaded crack as part of the process. As the Microsoft spokesperson acknowledged, there are reports about the crack, which requires setting a computer's BIOS clock to 2099. The hack does work on 32-bit Windows Vista installations but not necessarily on 64-bit versions. The process requires some other Windows changes and an eventual clock reset from within Vista, leading to a perpetual state of 30 days to activation.

With Vista, Microsoft introduced an anti-piracy mechanism, Software Protection Platform, or SPP, which supposedly raises the activation bar to a higher level. Users must activate within 30 days of installation or the software throttles back functionality. For enterprises purchasing through volume licensing, there is a reactivation required within every 180 days.

Clearly, crackers are taking on the challenge of circumventing the anti-piracy technology.

"Microsoft will take action against known hacks and workarounds and will utilize the Software Protection Platform technologies in Windows Vista in order to protect consumers from being defrauded by counterfeit versions and putting their systems at risk," said the Microsoft spokesperson.

Cracks introduce unnecessary security risk, as thwarted activation could undermine the Automatic Update functionality. If the system fails to update on its own, cracked systems could become more vulnerable to unpatched Windows vulnerabilities. Users of hacked systems might also choose to turn off Automatic Update, leading to similar vulnerabilities. With the Monster Vista builds, Microsoft issued an update to disable product activation hacks. Microsoft could take similar action with the Time Stopper hack by way of Automatic Update.

A secondary security consideration is the cracking process itself, which in at least one iteration requires software download and installation. Hackers can use cracks like this one to infect the Windows installation with malware.

I agree with the Microsoft spokesperson who cautioned that "pirated software can install Trojans, spyware or other malware, and some enable installation of Windows but leave the system vulnerable to takeover of administrative rights so that it can be controlled or watched remotely."

During Windows development, I had several conversations with Microsoft executives about UAC (User Account Control) warnings, which were ridiculously numerous. The one I found perplexing: UAC warning for changing the time or date. While Microsoft throttled back the number of UAC pop-ups, the time and date warning remained.

The newest activation hack is a deliberate changing of the time, by the user. Some malware also fiddles with the user clock.

Only a complete imbecile would run this crack. The blog implies that it would interfere with updates, but I'd be surprised if you could apply any updates at all to an unactivated copy of Windows.

MikeM. :

Yes you can apply updates after you have successfully applied the "new" crack. The new crack runs Vista without time limitations in full funactionality.

Beach Bum :

The only way this hack can happen is the poor code that comes out of Redmond. Make me wounder about the rest of the system.

MikeM :

"If it has been made by man it can be cracked by man."

Rob :

I wonder if Microsoft has ever done a study to figure out at what price they could sell Windows so it's expensive enough that they make a reasonable profit and cheap enough that nobody would bother to try to run a pirated copy? Stories like this make Linux look better and better. There will come a point where all of Microsoft's R&D efforts will be put into product activation schemes.

Matt :

In response to Rob -

Funny... I was just thinking the same thing. I'd actually consider buying a licensed version of Windows if it wasn't so expensive. What's XP Pro selling for $300? No thanks. That made me start playing around with Linux even more. I'm trying to get a box set up now, actually. The only problem is lack of software... there's not nearly as much as Windows has, and I don't do programming.

MikeA :

You can't really believe that Rob.

In response to Rob-
I believe that there's really more linux software out there than for windows. Just not as much 'commerical' stuff sitting on shelves everywhere. I guess until it's made that available, most won't know about it. Check out several of the sites like Red Hat, Novell SUSE, Debian and Xandros for all the precompiled packages available for those ports.

Kal Durak :

I haven't found there to be any lack of software. My only problem with Linux is that I have to learn the new way of doing things.
I admit that it is a bit of a challenge, but I'm slowly switching over my Windows systems to Linux. I just can't be bothered with the M$ roller coaster any longer.

Brian :

Seriously... I think VISTA should retail for $125
This makes it easier for people and sell volumes since all OS from Microsoft are constantly releasing patches like Windows XP patches from 2001 to present, why sell it so expensive, everyone will consider it a beta version if there are always new updates coming out every month or bimonthly?

MikeM :

To Brian: Which Vista edition should retail $125- Ultamate or Home Premium?

freedom2innovate :

Larry's comment should serve as a reminder to all : Just because someone's job is to write knowledgeable technical articles, dosen't mean they can.
My personal opinion of eWeek just dropped through the floor, I can say that much.

Pixeldawg :

I can't understand why computer manufacturers and Microsoft don't get together and design a chip that embeds the OS. Each computer would be charged for the OS and it would become hacker and virus proof. The military has been doing this for years, and it doesn't seem like it would be a difficult thing to do. Why are we not doing this?

Marco :

The only salvation?
You have to understand that M$ never will be
secure. Why? simple, if it's sure you don't need either a "security update" nor (obviously) WGA ,then how will damn M$ make us go to its' website?
"If the system fails to update on its own, cracked systems could become more vulnerable to unpatched Windows vulnerabilities. Users of hacked systems might also choose to turn off Automatic Update, leading to similar vulnerabilities"
Apparently only the "security update" might help "us" (read M$) therefore, as an answer to even out its need for both security and insecurity M$ NEVER WILL BE SECURE (remember 5 years ,60.000 employees and?)
Do you want security? better look somewhere else

Canon :

Prices would be lower if less effort spent on anti-piracy technology, less effort spent on multiple versions of the same product, less effort towards proprietary file and system formats and more open system support and less integration of useless bundled software. One product, one price. After all it is an operating system. Microsoft lost sight of their customer.

True, the "critical updates" fix holes. So does a good firewall and so does knowing what you are doing. Don't leave it to Microsoft to tell you what holes need to be fixed. Whose fixing the holes that they are opening for them - oh the hackers. When the hackers do it, they are under "legal" scutiny, when Microsoft does it it is a fix to "compromised binary code". Why are Internet Explorer 7.0 a critical update and the Microsoft Genunine Advantage tool? Critical update for whom. Rediculous.

Media Player 11.0 is a beacon to Microsoft. If it is broken, it WILL phone home to be fixed without your approval. It is merely a billboard of advertisements. URGE and the other garbage is forced upon the consumer each time it is used.

I was on the Microsoft bandwagon, it served it's purpose, now it has grown too large and I am making my way off this bandwagon.

I too am a newbie to Linux with a little learning curve. Current drawback, lack of software ... but it is getting better.

Beware of e-impersonators!

Vista's ativation is a pain in the neck, made me test-drive linux. Well, it does have/do almost everything that I need, maybe along 2007 it will...

Joe Blow :

After reading this article...my conclusion is that i think this writer need to wake up and smell the roses. I've just had it with their saying a hacked version is more vulnerable. The only difference is the key, or the lack of one for that matter.
I guess we can say a police officer is more safer from (or more vulnerable to) danger with a different badge number!
The only vulnerability is to their fucking stock price. Why don't they have the integrity to just say they don't want to be ripped off and quit all this not fair to their customers bullshit?Let face it...microsoft you dropped the ball here again!
As for updates...simple use an legel copy for the update and create a update disc...looks like i'm up to date!

MikeM :

To Joe Blow: This is the same post you posted at Keznews.com, but very informative opinion indeed.

Jazz :

I won't even really entertain the idea of getting Vista until it is atleast a year old. The number of software bugs, and incompatibilities is going to take them a while to work out.

Whenever some new software does come out. I'll buy a copy and then use cracks just so I don't have to register the dang software. I don't support any companies data collection efforts. My personal data is my own business. It doesn't belong to Microsoft.

The only reason I'll get Vista is for work reasons. I know companies are going to stay in the Microsoft mainstream for years to come and I would like to keep working as an IT guy.

But I think I'll stick with XP for my home computer, and start duel booting it with Linux. Or maybe I'll do that Cardinal sin and switch to Mac.

I'm shocked, *shocked* to find out there are vulnerabilities going on here! (with apologies to the late, great Claude Rains)

HP :

Well I can tell you, MS drop the price on the business edition from 239.00 to 139.00 and Ultimate from 399.00 to 199.00 and I would really consider buying a legit copy. I have alot of better things to spend that type of money on than software. Heck, I can buy XP now for 89.00 and be legit and still have support for awhile! No matter what, lower the price, hacking will become less. Think about it, Vista is so secure, why would updates be needed then??? They should sell it cheap and reap the profits from the volume.

Matt :

Hey, if Ultimate is dropping from $399 to $199, I'd consider it... but it's still a lot of money in my book. I'm still playing around with Linux and would like to move all of my Windows boxes over. Perhaps you're all right that the software is available for Linux... I guess I just need to look harder.

Timbalionguy :

I switched to Linux six or seven years ago; I haven't missed upgrading my version of Window$ at all! That said, I am stuck running it in many places on my job because the business world still seems blinded to the fact that something that is 'free' can also be good.

The rest of the world is adopting new business models and looking very differently at intellectual property. Why aren't we? Is is because everyone in Rdmond walks around holding a dollar bill in front of their eyes and can't see the real world in front of them? As a result, they trip on things in their path, and keep making the same blatant mistakes over and over!

I think the only way I would own a copy of this malware called Vista is with a hack as described here.

Too many lambs not enough lions.... Sure I read this artice so everthing in it must be true....
Thank god for MS and keeping me and my PC safe from those hackers and crackers.... and thanks for data mining.... spam spam the majikal fruit...

anyways... this post was as useless as this article itself..... I'm sure glad we have the Media with the understanding enough to convey to the masses the trouble with cracks and the viri in them... run for the hills... dem there cracks be danger----o--russsss...

Tune in, Turn off and Drop out.

Tim D :

Yet another reason I am glad I moved to Linux and OSX 2 years ago.

I use XP on my worklap top that my company provded for me. It's the only windows box I have left in the house. My home file server is Suse and the rest of my boxes are Macs. I've never looked back.

Vista, whatever. I am not going to spend the money on bloatware. If my employer wants to dish out the cash for it fine, but not me. I'm saving for a Mac Pro and more 360 games.

jstn :

this article is proposterous.

i will freely admit i pirate every copy of windows they decide to release. why? you shouldn't have to pay for an operating system: all there is to it. they should offer their services for free for as much money as they have made off the idiotic consumer that buys into this crap.

let's first examine the aspect of unpatched versions of windows. i don't know who patches their copies, but i sure don't. why? i have no reason to get hacked. why? i am a lowly consumer. i am a worthless target, and even though i may get a virus on occasion, i could always reinstall or just remove it with the free tools put out there.

and let's move on to the idiot's point in this article, which he quite obviously does not comprehend or ever could, and that's the fact that there's an unspoken (and now revealed) code amoungst us crackers: we won't put something on a computer that doesn't belong there. what motivation have we in the past to do this? none. how many cracks have i run in the years? thousands. how many have had a virus? none. how many have had malware or whateverware? not a single one. now, the SITES you go to are a different story, but honestly: this is the stupidest notion that the modern media is trying to spin. your security is of no concern to an every-day hacker. maybe to a worm, but those'll always be around, and there's nothing anyone can do about that, so get over it.

i am sick to death of people saying "don't crack it." this is just the bass-ackwards way microsoft has engineered to fear-monger the stupid people who would normally take cracked software, but have no idea how to crack it themselves.

"but gerald, there might be spyware on there, because some computer hacker cracked that version..! we paid five dollars american in hong kong for it... do you really think it's safe?"

why wouldn't it be?

and besides, they're just computers.

T :

Come on guys, wake up. None of you obviously know much about writing software, commerce or (here we go) the real world for that matter. Sure, I 'acquire' software now and then otherwise I'd be broke keeping up with things in this market but I will say that the quality of the software coming out of MS is as good as any, their documentation is bar none and their support is top notch (level 2 and up that is thanks to overseas outsourcing of level 1). I've worked writing code and in systems administration in corporate environments for 15 years. Worked with Solaris, Linux(Red Hat, Suse), OSX and MSWIN. All have their merits (personally I think Solaris kicks any flavor of Linux) but when it comes down to selecting a long term supportable platform thats cost effective its back to MSWIN. Bugs, come one, how many kernel patches do you get on your linux box a month and be honest because I run Linux on a couple machines. The issue with MSWIN is the fact that everyone actually uses it (unlike all the hype on Linux which I rarely actually run in to in production environments) and the press loves to harp on the big guy, good for sales. Who can you actually point a finger at when there's a security flaw in Linux and who's actually going to notice for that matter. All you guys running Linux, unless you get in to writing kernel code or are a C guru, you'll end up back on Windows and maybe keep Linux laying around on one of your old computers to hang on to the spirit of stickin to the big guy, been there. There's just not the array of software available, compatibility, come one, recompile your kernel to install ATI video drivers, get a kernel panic after you plug in that USB device. Any OS that requires GCC installed to keep up with updates and install device drivers concerns me. The only real competitor to MSWIN is OSX, that way you can get your *NIX fix along with the commercial support and quality that come along with, you guessed it, a price tag. Its time to put an end to the load of crap hype around the quality of software coming out of M$ (love that one).

rittmey :

To Jim Szatkowski:

Even though there is a tremendous amount of (mostly) free software available for Linux it is still way less compared to software available for Windows. Not at least because most of the Open Source software available for the free operating systems (of which Linux is just one) is also available for Windows and sometimes for Mac OS X.

Only very specific apps and software combined into KDE or Gnome are not available for Windows (and since KDE will be available for Windows at some point in the future, even this will change). So even the 10.000 (or more) packages for debian cannot beat the amount of shareware, freeware, commercial apps and open source apps available for Windows.

This will only change when more developers migrate to Linux or develop their apps cross-platform. I guess this eventually will happen. But Linux is not there yet.

Nevertheless: There is a bunch of good software available and whether Linux is good enough for one mostly depends on the actual software needs one has.

hoqenishy :

What a classic utilization of fear, uncertainty and doubt! You want to talk trojans? Let's look at the DRM scheme in Vista.

This crack is cleaner than half of the behind-the-scenes nonsense that Vista uses to try and circumvent private and personal use of media. I'm not going to pay for an operating system that is LESS functional than previous versions, hence I pirate Vista.

Mike :

Hello All,
This is very offensive to myself and MANY other professional software developers. Why do you folks continue to grind on with these Hacks simply to CHEAT a fine company. Microsoft invests millions in the development of a better OS that they SUPPORT, UPDATE and DEFEND. Please stop this kind of crap and spend the few bucks they ask for this fine OS and not worry about Hacks and Virus put in by your cheating ways. You might consider signing up for Microsoft Live OneCare to keep your Vista up-to-date and clear of Virus.

Mike

Mike, it's people like you that make me laugh. Just another dumb programmer with a so-called education. A professional would care about what he programs and program it correctly. Not full of bugs and shortcuts. So you so-called professional HACKS can kiss my butt! Until you tidy up, you better shut up!

Havnt we seen this three way argument somewhere before ??.At the end of day,no-one on here will change the others opinion or change their computer habits. The "hacker" will be using his kms server activated vista business edition. The mac user will keep typing plain text, safe in the knowledge he`s safe whilst using the coolest keyboard. The programmer who cuts and pastes from word, because he`s paid for it and appreciates the 50,000 lines of code. The linux user, because it`s free - as in beer. Does it really matter ???

It's Only Me :

T, the financial organisation where I work uses a mixture of different operating systems, in production, testing and development environments - including a number of Linux servers ;)

Also, you should take a look at a more recent distro if the last one you used gave a kernel panic cause you plugged a USB device in, or if you had to recompile your kernel to use ATI drivers. I've not had these issues for many years now.

Regards,
It's Only Me

ps - I agree with you about Solaris > Linux

I have used win95/98se/me/2000/xp what annoys me (I am 56 years old) each time microsoft stops support for an o/s its sale pitch to buy the latest o/s is your system will be in secure, who has confidence in a company who admits that a product they have produce and tried to patch for several years, in all cases is till vunerable. what other product would you buy with this sort of history??????

I used OS X for 2 years, its very smooth, I also used BSD and Linux Every system has its (dis)advantages. For instance it is difficult not to use windows if you are dependant on several software packages which run only on windows. As far as stability is concerned, OS X also crashed quite oftem although Mac users would never admit it. Ok, its more stable than windows, but I found myself always putting up with "small inconveniences" while using mac.

I don't care which OS to use, as long as World of Warcraft runs on it smoothly. It bloody does on Windows :-)

No, sereously, Vista is to expensive. The only thing you can do is get an academic license through a friend or so.. Thats way cheaper. Or fucking crack it dudes.

Layne :

For those that say the cost of the new OS is because of software piracy, you're nuts... Its like the music industry whining about losing music revenue... So they make $7.5 billion instead of $8 billion because of piracy (which is a total bs guess on their part how much they lose to piracy). They still make $7.5 billion... No one's going to go hungry or live on the street... And lets say the R&D for M$ OS's is at $50 million (including all salaries for those involved, etc). They invest $50 million in creating the new OS and see a profit over that OS's lifetime of billions of dollars and they whine about piracy? I don't feel bad for them. Do you?

ade :

please help me, i need crack activation windows vista, please sent to my email..

Well i just installrd the final release and the crack works great. I dont condone copying (but love it really) I would like to add if the sw o/s was cheap i would buy it, but m$ wont do something as stupid as that so the pirate market will always be with us. CRACKERS ROCK

I think that most of you seem to be forgetting that the main basis of Windows has been and will always be "User Friendliness". Not everyone has the time, money, or intellectual aptitude to learn or use a complex peice of software, not programmed in the world of user-experience. In my opinion it is worth the additional cost purely for that reason.
I am a software programmer, CCNA, A+ Technician, and own my own company. I openly support Open-Source software, but I do NOT support the mentality that Open-Source is better than Proprietary. I sell and support MS Windows not because it is easy for "Me" to use, but rather it is easier for my customers to use.
If you think that Windows is too expensive then download and install whichever distribution of Linux you wish, but be prepared to apply security patches of your own! Linux is not patch resistant!
Microsoft invests money into patches and security updates to be created because software changes and evolves NOT because they are incompetent.

Hey, It is 2007.
Why so many of you are still using or considering to use Windows while there are modern alternatives available?

RickD :

The fact that most people now have 2 or 3 machines at home and dont have the billons Gates has. BOOTLEG. If he would make a home vers that could be install on say 4 systems as long as they are on the same home network. and sell it at a reasonable price, I'd get in line for a legal copy. But I have 4 machines counting my kids and if one of them has to be a bootleg they all might as well be. Sorry Bill, Dont have the 600.00 bucks just to put your OS on my systems.

AD :

Those of you complaining about the price of Ultimate at $399 don't know how lucky you are..

M$, in its unstopping attempt to bolster its bottom line is selling Ultimate in the UK for £399 (stirling).. now considering that the exhange rate is currently $1 - to £0.51, that makes it that I'm actually spending $800 for the same box.

Get ****ing real Bill, and you wonder why piracy is rife?

ok people i got vista!!!! running all smooth its not a legit copy! i dloaded it from the internet burned it and installed it. it came with a read me file which has got 4 tricks to make vista 30day trial last for 4 months..by then there will be an activation out. by the way i installed it on a system which has no internet on it.
as for the dude with the above stuff... he should get a life.. microsoft knows, there is no way one cant activate its non legit copy.. and as for shit up dates get from a legit copy burn em and install on your non legit;)vista. jstn : some excellent points made but you obviously do not realise that running a compiled exe (such as a crack or keygen) can fuck your system over royally, as you don't know whats in the code. Maybe you do, but like you say rebuild is often easy ;)

Re: Vista: The biggest laugh is going though cnet or zdnet or "microsoft-watch" is reading the open source geeks going - "Vista has finally convinced me to use Linux."

Erm - guys, there is reason only 1% or the world uses Linux on home computers. There was 1% five years ago, and there's 1% now, and it will be less that 1% five years from now. People don't want it! Get it?

It's going nowhere...and have you seen the Gnome or KDE desktop? It's total crap...total grade 3 rubbish compared to a real O/S. Get Mac. Get Windows. Get whatever. I make decent money at my job telling people how to manage AD, and how to stay away from inferior Unix systems.

let's just say you get what you pay for...

Mike :

I love this. Microsoft bashing here, Microsoft bashing there... activation, product keys.... but somehow, I feel I'm missing all that. Oh yea, the restrictive licensing provisions too... meanwhile, right around the corner in Sunland, OpenSolaris is thriving, in BSDworld the BSD's are surviving happily (not to mention I run FreeBSD, and it supports all of my games except for one). And I don't miss any of the crap from Microsoft. No product keys when I install anything, no worries about my data being stolen by some rogue piece of spyware... none of that. Open source, I hate to say, seems to be the way to go nowaday.

Josh :

I like windows because of the ease of use. Linux is such a pain in the rear. First you have to spend hours configurating the O/S and searching for the right drivers only to find out they don't have them for your setup so you change your monitor or video card. Then, to install a program you have to build it and install like 30 requirements. It takes way to long. If you mess up one little thing the whole system will crash. I've given linux a chance, I am an experienced programmer and see no rational reason to use it as a general operating system. Sure its good for survers and such, but for general uses its far behind. Windows is definetly the way to go. O and in response to the article, cracks dont make your system vulnerable.

Seven Chapterz :

You selfcentred bastards.
Ya'll gone tell me that buying a m*therf_cking Vista is a problem? Ya'll crazy people rather risk loosing all yo data then enhance it? You must be out of your G*dd*mn minds. Stop this crack(er)attitude right now. Cuz if one of you fools think that Microsoft (worth a billions) is going to stand by and watch you crack this egg then you must have been smoking crack. Save up some money and BUY idiots BUY!! Stop wasting money on hookers and junkfood and BUY idiots BUY!! Stop downloading sh!t and BUY idiots BUY. I've got Windows Vista and it's allright. Pay up bitches pay up!!

New York Minute :

WindowsXP works just fine for me! yes, I have a non-cracked version of vista running and it works fine. Drivers are a bit quirky though. As for "Seven Chapterz" comments....Vista should be a little cheaper though. Has anyone read the agreement? Pretty funny statement about upgrades. If you upgrade, your previous operating system license is no longer valid..Part 13 of the agreement says this! That is ridiculous! I paid for WindowsXP. Upgrading to Vista (with an upgrade dvd) which I also paid for invalidates the previous? Perhaps MS should refund the price I paid for XP or offer the ugrade free and we will call it even!

m$ :

Yeh im running legit xp pro right now cost alot.. and i would like to upgrade to vista... why can i not my automatic updates please?? i pay for o/s and you don't update me? whats going on here? your makeing me mad.........

Herc :

I like Microsoft's Windows. I admit it. I like using it, and I like the fact that games and software is supported by it. I like the fact that they come out with patches. However, I am in college, and can barely afford to eat and commute to my college because I can't afford a place nearby it than I can afford to update to Vista Ultimate, which is also more than half of what my gaming PC costed me. On top of which, I also have my laptop. I use my laptop to remote desktop to my desktop all the time and use it not only for a fileserver, but a to use my bandwidth at home while I'm not there, so Ultimate is the only one I would get.
I got the beta version of Vista, and I liked it. Now Vista is out, and the college I go to is broke because the last president was a dickhead and spent way to much money on stupid shit, so I can't have no way of aquiring Vista from them.
So how am I suppose to get Vista Ultimate for both my desktop and laptop?
Cracked versions.
On top of which, I have a non-genuine version of XP for my desktop. Why? Because I have other computers no longer in use that I have purchased XP for, and its bull that I can't decommission two computer and put my xp license on another computer. Also, have you ever run a legit copy of windows? Activation is such a pain in the ass! If I install a new processor, windows comes up and goes "ACTIVATION REQUIRED!" Try and do it online? Failure! Part of your code is based off your processor, so you have to call MS Tech support and babble to someone that doesn't understand english until they finally get that all you did was upg from 1.6GHz to 2.4GHz. I don't need to waste my time telling someone I don't know that I upgraded my computer, and due to the fact that thier primary language is Hindu Indian, it takes an hour. In the end, a cracked version disconnected from M$'s twisted databases works smoother and doesn't bother me.
Does anyone here buy Dells? My laptop is a Dell, and I love it. They gave me a sweet XP disc that never has and trouble with activation. Doesn't even show up @ startup, and its a clean install disc not a factory restore. M$ must deal with Dell specially. Thats why I'd rather buy an entire comp than buy Vista separate. Its cheaper, but only from a place like Dell. I'd never buy a desktop, their too spendy and I get more buy building my own.
Rant = finished
Herc = out
Later all.

m$ :

Hi herc I have a XPS M1710 from dell it gets to damn hot and the paint melted off the bottum of it.

COME ON M$ ATLEAST GIVE ME THE VISTA THEME...

Steven :

Just a note Larry. Not everyone who would run such a crack would be complete imbacile. I mean there were and still are numerous sites that mirror Microsoft patches/update/service packs and drivers without requiring secure authentication, activation, or genuine validation with a mere 1-2 week delay from the point they are posted on Microsoft's Windows Update site. I see no reason to believe that similar sites will not arise for Vista.

Also, what about those of us running systems in a closed network environment, offline and secluded from the internet in the first place. No need to activate and patch unless software demands it, or the users are dumb enough to move files corrupted and infected with spyware/malware onto the systems on their own.

Arllie Donato :

hey guys,.. mind if you could teach me how to install the vista activation crack?? i really don't know how.. i don't even have the crack yet.. thanks a lot...

Chirag Sangani :

It has been almost 8 years since I have been using Microsoft software. As a kid, I have always used Windows, right from the infamous 95 to the recently-outdated XP. When I installed XP, I had no option, since Linux was not so widespread then. 2 or 3 years down the line, Windows stopped working and I had to install linux. Till then, I was almost on the point of eagerness to intall linux on my system. But within half and hour, I realised that Windows was way ahead in terms of user-friendliness. It took me almost 2 hours to get a web-browser running. Within two days, I got Windows reinstalled. As they say, first impression are the last impressions. And my first impression of Linux was definitely not so rosy. (Later I came to know that it wasn't Windows' fault, my hard drive had crashed) Today, I have an option to upgrade to Vista, or go the Linux way, out of which I am taking the former, for many reasons:
1. I am a gamer, and most games are meant for Windows. Sure, you might say they will support Linux in the future, but I do not know how near that future is, and I am definitely not interested in waiting.
2. Windows is great. All those who keep on harping that linux is better than windows are simply beating around the bush. Windows XP is stable, no doubt about it, as my windows has hardly ever crashed till now in around 5 years even with installing so many programs and messing around with every concievable setting, including the registry, and I have no reason to suspect that Vista wont't be even more so.
3. Windows is secure. Sure, you all must be rolling on your backs laughing when I say this, but here's some food for thought: Have you ever been using Windows only to be infected by a virus only to realise that an update was available but you forgot to download it because you had disabled Automatic Updates with the fear that Microsoft might 'steal' your private data, whatever that may mean. My computer does not have an antivirus, not even a firewall. I have even disabled the Windows firewall, and I have an always-on connection. For 3 years, I have never had so much of a trace of a virus in my computer, courtsey Automatic Updates which updates my Windows regularly, even though it is cracked (yes, you read that right). It is simply unfair to blame Microsoft for coming out with so many updates (as you have to install them everytime) if Microsoft DOES give you an option to have silent updates installed without your interruption, but you disable it because your fear of 'privacy'. You have zero-privacy anyway, get over it. And yes, I trust Microsoft, seeing that as they are the biggest company in the world, I doubt they would want to prosper by stealing my data. And don't tell me Linux does not have flaws/bugs for which patches which have to installed every once in a while.

So now, I have decided to buy Windows Vista, a legitimate copy, as I feel that they deserve the money. If you don't like Microsoft, don't buy their products, but stop trying to convert other people also.

Works! Just google for the above, or search Pirate Bay, demonoid or keznews etc.
One-click Vista activation.
*NO TIMESTOPPER*

James :

Tom you're a retard. You flaunt pointless my dog is bigger than your dog BS around. Who cares. You clearly missed Mike's point. Software, regardless of who sells it, is someone's bread and butter. What's next, you steal car's because you feel they're too expensive? Buy it, don't buy it, I really don't care. What's funny though is your "got to have it" attitude towards Vista. If you have such a moral objection towards M$'s business, why don't you go and use Linux or some cheap (i.e. free) crap for running your games and your pirated copy of Office. Think before you have something to say, hypocrite! GFY.

ES :

When M$ will sell Vista Ultimate for 99$, I will buy one. Wake up Bill, it's either 99$ or nothing.

petr :

vista key

Polotech :

Ha, all this complaints about Vista, Linux etc. Why?

Most will get Vista with new computer like it or not. Most Linux distros are free to use and you can use a hack to try a different flavor of Vista.

Use them all and you will learn more than you now know. Each have something to offer so why use only one?

Stop bitching and enjoy!

mosa :

They should make it cheaper than 100$

John Machate :

I love MS windows, Ive been using it since I was a boy. Ive tried using linux but it's pretty hard. Ive accomplished many projects, solved some problems, gained knowledge using MS windows and it's application. I just want to pay for the software I love, so its just fair to get a legitimate copy. people who created windows needs money too, just like you and me!

AK :

i know ppl out there who have been using XP the since the first day that it came out and continuing doing so with out buying it. same would be the case with vista. so why bother. after all if you just assume the number or M$ OSs out there and if all were genuine, i'd say that Bill and M$ would be doing 100 times better that what they are now.. isnt it simply rediculous.. so why bother. just sit back and enjoy!

remember: if man can make it sure does he can crack it ;)

mcmalo :

freedom of speech

They are using scare tactics to cover their own mistakes. They want people to believe the stupid crack will make windows vulnerable.

Bad programming makes windows vulnerable.

they say beware of malware? well I believe windows vista is the malware at first.

They need activation and SPP because the price is a ripp off!. If the price would be right there would be no need to use that chastity belt called activation!!!. People refused to sit duck, pay trough the nose and get ripped off and they call it piracy. I call it wake up call!!!. I suggest to skip to windows vista ultimate service pack last-one-ever-need-it: Linux. Or if you care hacker enough get that crazy version of MacOSX that runs on non apple machines (but do not get close to steve jobs).
It really please me off that they are using a stupid scare tactic to cover the crack thing. Looks like those chirstian church that put you fear that anything that is not blessed by god (and they say what is and what is not) will take you to hell. Then they deliver child molesters. ....hmmm...makes you think. Maybe Steve Balmer should run for Pope on his next business venture :-) or something like that.

Lance :

its probably ziped or something so it can't hacked it probably sences online connections thats why its probably hard to crack another words they probly added another check sum and then file thats non zip format before it so those two the trojan from windows xp and the trojan from this one or it only has one problem the trojan or the activatioon impossible to crack

Who Cares :

How many of you whiners play online games? Now think about how many times you sit there and wait, and wait, and wait for your "updates" to download to improve the experience of your time. This is the exact same thing as MS is doing so why don't you quit whining about the updates to an operating system.

I look at some of the posts and see people complaining about updating their box, and saying that MS should have this done with the release. While I agree that MS does tend to release products a little early there would still be updates, regardless. I guess the real point is why doesn't anyone thats pissed off about it enough re-invent the wheel and try to develop an OS anything like Windows from scratch and lets see how many "updates" you will actually have.

Just my 2 cents worth.

fucking hell :

what the fuck vista. who want to buy such stupid and expensive software? i got few pirated and crack.. NEW.. anyone?

this article is bullshit. crackers dont put malware in their cracks. if you get malware from a crack, then you got the crack from the wrong place. never use p2p to get cracks unless its torrented.

Listen UP :

Hi there everyone.........

Bottom line no software is perfect....anyone who supports pc's knows this...

If microsoft lowered the prices there would be far less piracy....there will always be cheepskates that will steel a nickle but you'll never stop it...

Here's an example....I've been running cracked versions of Norton antivirus for years.....

Finally I found a oem version for 26.00

Guess what???? i don't run pirated copies anymore! :)

Make it affordable and reasonable for the average user and guess what??? People won't see the need to steel it....

The cost of running, supporting, and developing all this anti piracy tech could be used better lowering the prices....

funny I never ran cracked versions of 95 or 98.... it wasn't until 2000 that I got fed up with the high prices...

Now lets cut the crap with 12 different versions.... at least cut it down to 2 like xp... (media center and pro were the same)

cunt :

All men love cracks in any form lol

Ok
I am a 15 year old Nerd. I have ran 98/me/xp/vista and i have touched ubuntu.
I run many open source programs (firefox) and love them ( they are a little hard to use at first) I pirate everthing from music to videos to softwear. For the music and videos its like stealing from the rich and giving to the poor and after a while i delete them. For the softwear i just think that its too GodDam ex$$$ Nero is $800 vista is $400 just some simple light scribe softwear is $50!!i just dont have the money to give to theis people.

Me and my frinds love trying to find suctriy flaws. Like one day we hacked into the Canton network in fiften minuts. We sat at a coffe shop and collected facebook passwords.

The reson why Lunix works is becouse its like open source if thiers a promblem that someone finds they fix it or tell someone ulse to fix it and MAC is just a comanation of Lunix code thats why MAC works.

and if any one has a vista 32 and 64 bit ultmate code i would like it.

Money dont grow on trees Bill Gates even if you think it does!

wan :

Why use nero when there's free software around? (like cdburnerxp)
Why do you _have to have_ ms office, when you can use the (imho less functional) openoffice.

It's all a matter of choice.

Personally, I'm fed up with hypocrites saying "I want vista, but don't want to pay for it." Ask yourself the question. Why do you want Vista anyway? Has it got anything to do with the "Oh! Shiny! New!"-feeling the marketing division of MS is trying to give you?
All my desktops here are running on either ubuntu or a legit copy of winXP. And I'm perfectly content.
Ok, sure, there is some curiousity about Vista. But that'll have to wait till I buy me a new computer with OEM installed, or I finally decide to go broke.

I really don't see what Vista has in terms of better functionality. Take a look at a few system requirements for games, for instance. Some games require almost the double amount of specs to run it at the same detail on Vista. If you don't have the cash for a new OS, will you have the cash for a new $500 DX10 video card?
Above issue asides, I'm sure that you'll using the OS more then the processing power of the video card.

But perhaps that's the problem? We're using the OS all the time, that we're forgetting that it's actually something seperate from the hardware.

As far as I'm concerned, as stated above... it's all a matter of choice. Either you use linux, xp, vista, osx or whatever... Nobody forces you to use anything. If you don't want to spend your money on os/software, there are plenty of freeware alternatives available. Some have less functionality, others have more. Try it out, and perhaps you'll learn something new.

laddi :

Yes you can apply updates after you have successfully applied the "new" crack. The new crack runs Vista without time limitations in full funactionality
