Code Name: Fremont

Code Name: Fremont

Origins (If Known): Fremont is a hipster neighborhood in Seattle, a stones-throw from Microsoft's Redmond campus, famous for its year-round open-air market that allows anyone to sell "everything you can imagine and some things you can't." Microsoft is hoping to position the Fremont Windows Live service in a similar way – as a global marketplace for all kinds of goods and services.

Actual Product/Technology Name: Windows Live Expo

Expected Delivery Date: Full, public beta expected spring 2006. Final version: No due date so far.

Additional Details: We suspect this Windows Live service will be angled as a GoogleBase and/or Craig's List killer. After rechristening Fremont as Windows Live Expo and showing screen shots at CES in early January, Microsoft released in February a test build of the product to a select, closed group of testers, and then swiftly pulled it without explanation. A full, public beta is promised by the Redmodians for this spring.
