Coming Soon: IE 8 Public Beta
|
News Brief. Microsoft plans to release Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 about two months sooner than expected. |
The release had been expected in October during Microsoft's Professional Developer Conference. Instead, Microsoft plans to release the IE 8 public beta sooner.
"You're going to see the beta of this coming out in August of this yearthat's Beta 2," Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates told TechEd 2008 attendees today. He described a Web browser as "the run-time" for the Web.
I laughed when Bill said about IE 8: "A very creative name that we've come up with." He wasn't being sarcastic or funny.
The earlier release can't be coincidental. Mozilla plans to launch Firefox 3.0 sometime soon, with great fanfare. The software is currently Release Candidate 1. Mozilla soon plans to announce the launch date in preparation for Download Day, where the organization will seek to set a record for the most number of downloads in a single day.
Firefox 3.0 and the recent release of Safari 3.1 are good reasons for Microsoft to get out a beta much sooner. Otherwise, IE 8 will be lost in the noise, particularly around Firefox 3.0, which is a major overhaul of the open-source Web browser.
Bill discussed some new IE featuresand there actually are some enhancements for a changesuch as Activities and Slices.

Do yourself a favor, and install a real browser, Firefox or Opera. Internet Exploder is the number 1 viral/malware target in Windows, second is Outlook, and third is Windows Media Player. You will never be entirely secure running these and surfing the internet. Not to mention the bugs in the first two.
What would be nice, is if the EU does what the US DOJ should have done long ago, force Micro$oft to remove Internet Explorer from Windows as a part of the system.
As a sign of the times that Vi$ta is not doing so great, and Seven will just be Vi$ta/2 warmed over code with a fresh paint of Seven UI/wallpaper, with a few useless features (bloat) thrown in, I present;
Apple owns 66% of $1,000-plus retail market, NPD Group says
http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyId=12&articleId=9087058&intsrc=hm_topic
Quote from the link; " Apple Inc.'s Macs accounted for 66% of first-quarter U.S. retail sales of personal computers priced at $1,000 or more, a market research firm said today."
--------------------------------------------------
This has to hurt regular PC OEM's badly, as that $1,000 or more market in the USA, is probably the one with the highest profit for them. With only Vi$ta/Seven/sp2 in the future, or more of the same rejected Vista, a possible OEM revolt is a possibility. The only real recourse for OEM's would be to try to licence Mac OS X, or to install Linux, or ship with blank hard drives.
Also NPD estimates the Mac’s overall U.S. market share at 13.8 percent, up from 9.5 percent a year ago.

MicroCrap Internet Explodes is a complete piece of poop. You are a moron if you use it. IE 8 is no exception. Look into reviews of IE 8, Firefox 3 and Safari 3.1. Firefox crushes IE 8. Firefox is light and fast and very compliant and loaded with smart features. And you can customize your browser with add-ons. IE add-ons are a complete laughing stock by comparison. And Vistuck? Please! What a waste of time and development $. I don't care how many sales they lie about, it is a complete disaster and failure, and MicroCrap knows it. And forget 7, they should name it 13 instead. Just going to be Vistuck SE, so who cares. By the time that disaster is released, consumers and businesses will figure out Linux is a far better choice for OS as Firefox is the far better choice for browser.

VCSY/Msft Markman Hearing in 29 days.
(By Portuno-GREAT READ!)
From March 17, 2000:
Typically, after a "Markman" hearing, the successful party will file a motion for summary judgment on patent infringement and/or validity, which is granted with increasing frequency. Accordingly, the importance of the "Markman" hearing in patent litigation cases cannot be overstated.

Quite interesting one of Microsoft's patents for new software modeling concepts cites VCSY's patent 6826744 as prior art.

People still use Internet Explorer?

People still praising FireFox?

@Ralph: Yes some people do still use Internet Explorer. They are referred to as MORONS.

Somebody tell Microsoft to stop making browsers altogether. They suck. Joe, don't even bother reporting on IE 8. It's a laughing stock and an embarrassment compared to real browsers like Opera and Firefox.

Firefox3 is shaping up pretty well, have been using it since Beta4 and found no reason to use FF2 again. There is no doubt FF3 will increase market share for the open source browser.
Downloaded latest build of Webkit today to see how far it has progressed. I'm not exaggerating when I say its runs at lighting speeds. It simply makes every other browser out there including FF3 RC1 look like a dinosaur, Dont know when Apple plans to release Safari with updated webkit engine, but do hope they do a 3.2 release soon just to let general public benefit from speed improvements.
Thanks to open source, something as mundane as browsers are still making progress. Without OSS folks, software landscape would have been as boring and dry as a desert

happy with firefox 2. Tested FF RC but i hate the new adress bar. And anyway, not all the addons that i use with ff 2 are available on ff3
Posted by dan | June 4, 2008 5:36 AM
Yup, calling someone a moron is a *really* good way to convince them to stop using IE.
Posted by Carlos | June 4, 2008 8:15 AM
IE needs to be put out to pasture because no matter what MS does to it, it cannot compete with other browsers such as FireFox. It's introduction of tabs in IE7 was horrible and its lack of customization compared to the likes of FireFox just shows that they are not thinking of the customer base to any extent (MS seems to be moving backend anyway with many of it's products such as Office and Windows). I still use IE but only as a last resort due to the website compability issues.

I-Man Heart VCSY The problem I have is I can't seem to get any malware to install on my system, so I can join in with the IE haters and talk about how great Firefox is. Problem I have is Firefox2 renders my pages completely differently from IE. My site stats tell me that over 90% of visitors are using IE. And Firefox3 renders them completely differently than Firefox2. Maybe I should change my musical tastes and become an Opera fan. Because while being a moron, I'm unable to sing the praises of Firefox. Now if you will excuse me I have to go find a virus so all the Firefox fans can be just a little bit happier today. And maybe, just maybe, I'll stop thinking Firefox is a POS.

Wow, what a bunch of rediculous comments. IE is perfectly safe if used by someone who doesn't view the web as a safe place where they can click on any link they please. A little education goes a long way and I know plenty of people who use IE and have never been infected by malware. The real problem is shortsighted web developers who ignore standards and write for IE only. Until all web sites are standards compliant (and big media sites are the worst) people will never switch from IE. If they go to a site with Firefox and it doesn't look the same as it did with IE, they switch back and never try it again.
And "Somebody tell Microsoft to stop making browsers altogether." Seriously? What planet are you living on?
Posted by Kenton | June 4, 2008 12:28 PM
Yes, a bunch of (but not all) ridiculous comments. "Don't even bother reporting on IE8"? Sheesh. Tim forgets that at once upon a time, IE was a ground-breaking browser product.
Evidently most of the commenters do not realize that at work, most people DO NOT HAVE A CHOICE of which browser gets loaded on their locked-down desktop. Or what coding standards are used for corporate web-apps. Fortunately I have more flexibility than that. IE8 is, like the Iraq war, newsworthy, whether the news is good or not.
Speaking of coding standards, how much longer will it be until "HTML tags for style" starts working?
Posted by Stratocaster | June 4, 2008 1:46 PM
I use Mozilla FF like many other IT veterans and I have never had an issue with it.
Posted by JM | June 4, 2008 2:41 PM
IE has never been ground breaking. Give me a break. IE 4 was the pinnacle of the IE browser, and at best it was almost as good as Netscape. Since then it has been mediocre at best and non-innovative. It is not newsworthy. I-Man Heart VCSY should reword his statement to, "Anyone who CHOOSES to use IE is a moron." because some of us have no choice when at work or on certain websites. I have to say that FF 3 really is awesome. it is so fast and renders pages very very well. Better than IE 8.
Posted by Tim | June 4, 2008 4:31 PM
It has nothing to do with "hating" IE. It is only a statement of fact that IE is in fact a giant piece of turd that is worthless and needs to be disposed of. Let the real browser developers do their thing with FireFox and Opera. In the mean time MicroCrap, fix you lipstick on a pig called Vistuck.
Posted by I-Man Heart VCSY | June 4, 2008 7:05 PM
I choose Firefox as it works on Operating Systems I actually enjoy using. IE is not an option.
This is not to say that firefox does not have its share of vulnerability issues so it is not fair to just bash IE on those grounds.
I hope websites build around activeX controls will soon be a thing of the past.
Posted by ciphernaut | June 5, 2008 12:17 AM
To say people are morons for using IE is just plain moronic in itself. I don't think FF2 was all that great as it had bad memory leak problems. IE7 used much less memory than FF2, however FF2 was more innovative and customizable, so overall I would say they rated about equal.
I will admit that FF3 appears to be pretty awesome and I now use it exclusively. I installed the IE Tab add-on for pages that will not display properly in FF, and do have to use it occasionally, but overall I am very happy with FF3.
And to say IE is not newsworthy is also pretty moronic. I doubt Microsoft will be giving up on it anytime soon, and the majority of people are going to use it and it will work just fine for them. And the majority of that majority are not morons.
Posted by Bob Maine | June 5, 2008 8:49 AM
Pages that only load properly in IE are not standards compliant and should be boycotted anyway, Bob Moron.
Posted by I-MAN HEART VCSY | June 5, 2008 10:29 AM
Actually, as an IT staff, we encourage people not to use IE where I work. We also encourage them not to use Safari. No, we are Firefox fans here. The only thing IE is good for is going to windowsupdate.com. Even then we have them use IE Tab, which actually uses IE. And yes, we pick up a few bugs just from that visit because IE just doesn't delete the cache when it closes like it's supposed to! EVEN WHEN YOU TELL IT TO!
Kind of like that feature in the Windows Taskbar preferences where you can tell it not to keep track of recently opened documents but it still does. It just doesn't display that it is until you find all the log files that have been keeping track of them against your will for who knows how long! The problem is, MS just doesn't know how to make anything safe for human consumption!
I think they should rename their company to BallmerSoft. That way we can call it by a more appropriate name: BS.

I-Man Heart VCSY @ Ralph: People who stay on the microsoft based web sites and praise Linux and Firefox are called as Nose pokers for none of their business. I am happy to see the linux and firefox supporters sitting all the time on windows based web sites..and poking their noses...They are called as POKERS...Cheers...
Posted by Rohit Dhand | June 8, 2008 2:36 PM
I SAID ANY SITE THAT ONLY DISPLAYS PROPERLY ON IE IS NOT STANDARDS COMPLIANT AND SHOULD BE BOYCOTTED. IF YOU ARE USING LINUX, AND YOU SHOULD, YOU ARE FORTUNATE, BECAUSE IE IS NOT EVEN AN OPTION. BUT IF YOU ARE RUNNING WINDOWS AND USING IE, YES YOU ARE DEFINITELY A MORON. YOU KNOW IT IS CRAP, FULL OF HOLES AND A MALWARE MAGNET.
Posted by I-Man HEART VCSY | June 9, 2008 8:11 PM
I am happy to see I-Man still there on Windows based web site and getting all the malware and others things. Visiting sites that are only visible on IE may effect u ultimately. Please dont visit them. Saying crap to 73% usage of IE and 90%+ usage of Windows..that u have gone mad. All the users of the above Data are mad and u and a community of Firefox are right. God bless u. But do keep coming on microsoft-watch and support Firefox and condemn IE. I am loving it...GOD Bless everyone.
Posted by Rohit Dhand | June 12, 2008 1:41 PM
I never said there was anything wrong with Windows-based websites you idiot. I am talking about pages that only appear to render properly when using IE. Those pages are not standards compliant and should be boycotted. IE is the problem. IE is the worst piece of garbage MS makes, even worse than, and it kills me to say this, worse than even Vista. Of course you are not 100% protected from malware because of using FF, but your odds are 99% better. I will go with that over IE crapware.
Posted by I-Man Heart VCSY | June 13, 2008 4:07 PM
Hi I-Man. Idiot are those who lose anger over issues which they have dont control. Ha ha ha. I am still loving it. If u are really depressed with the IE, so dont visit those forums that talk about crapy IE, because if u still speak about it, it means still u have some liking for IE. other wise u should purely be interested for the forums for Firefox and and not IE based web site. So dont get angry and relax and continue supporting Firefox 3.0, 4.0, 5.0.....and so on...God Bless u. And do respond in a angry manner and using harsh words...ha ha ha.

Rohit, sorry it upsets you that I speak the truth and attempt to save others from the crapware called Internet Explorer. But I will be happy to upset you if it saves even one person from the malware they will get from using IE. Feel free to continue proving yourself as a moron user of IE. Any malware you get on your system, you deserve.
As for this forum, I find it perfect for warning others about the dark side of Microsoft and their concern for their profits over user security, stability and usability.
So, to you I would say, "Don't worry, be happy", but that will be hard for you to do if you continue to use your cesspool browser IE.
