Microsoft, Acer Partnership Is About More Than Netbooks

Microsoft is pulling in a number of partners for the launch of Windows 7, including up-and-coming PC manufacturer Acer. While Acer grew its market-share off ultra-portable, inexpensive netbooks, Microsoft has publicly voiced its intention to persuade its manufacturers to produce ultra-thin notebooks at a higher price point.

Microsoft Retail Store to Open Oct. 22

Microsoft's first retail store will open in Arizona on Oct. 22, the same day that the company releases Windows 7. While Microsoft has taken a number of steps to ensure that the stores succeed financially, it faces substantial competition not only from Apple, but also from traditional retailers such as Best Buy and GameStop. Microsoft is tying in a number of promotions to the first store launch in order to promote turnout.

Apple May Try to Crash Microsoft's Windows 7 Launch

With the countdown to the Oct. 22 launch of Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system firmly under way, it seems that Apple may try to steal some of Microsoft's thunder with an ad campaign promoting Macs as a better alternative. Still, the combination of Redmond's promotional machine with the fact that many consumers are still looking for cheap PCs in the midst of a slow economy should help Microsoft disseminate its flagship product relatively unopposed.

Microsoft Using 'Family Guy' for Windows 7 Campaign

Microsoft and Fox are collaborating with "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane on a Windows 7-themed comedy program that will premiere on Nov. 8. The show, "Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show," will likely make more sense to audiences than the inscrutable Jerry Seinfeld ads crafted by Redmond to help promote Windows Vista.
