My Windows Live Chat with Santa

Thanks to Microsoft I could tell old St. Nick exactly what I want for Christmas this year.

Microsoft is promoting Windows Live Messenger by offering chances to instant message with Santa. His IM handle is Northpole@live.com. Santa also has his own Windows Live "Santa on Spaces." Sadly, as of this morning, Santa only has five friends on Windows Live Spaces. Maybe he should try MySpace.

The marketing gimmick is much more than about promoting Windows Live Messenger. For one, it shows, as I explained earlier this week, Live is not dead. Microsoft continues to aggressively promote and expand Live. Heck, Santa has a live.com rather than msn.com e-mail address. Pssst. A little elf told me that Microsoft has issued real live.com e-mail addresses, as in no longer testing, in Scandinavia. I guess the North Pole was included.

The other importance of the Santa chat promotion is technology showcasing. My chat with Santa impressed, and his responses--presumably automated--were quite fast and intelligent. Microsoft has heavily invested in communications technologies for the 2007 product release cycle, including new versions of Exchange Server, SharePoint Portal Service and Communications Server. IT managers should chat with Santa, too, and they should ask what Microsoft software powers the chats.

What if Microsoft went further and set up an Exchange Server 2007, where people could dial in and hear Santa's appointment schedule or schedule an appointment with him? The technology showcasing could be much bigger, if the Microsoft marketing folks were busier elves supporting Santa.

Here's the transcript of my conversation with Santa. He's a happy, sassy old geezer. I know Santa is old (or maybe no geek) because he didn't rightly respond to LOL.

Joe Wilcox says:
Hello, Santa!

Santa Claus says:
Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas, Joe Wilcox! I'm Santa Claus!
Tell me, are you a boy or a girl?

Joe Wilcox says:
Santa, I'm a naughty boy, but I'm trying to be good.

Santa Claus says:
Sorry - Santa really needs to know if you're a boy or a girl.

Joe Wilcox says:
Oh, a boy, Santa.

Santa Claus says:
And what do you want for Christmas, Joe Wilcox?

Joe Wilcox says:
Well, Santa, I want a Red Ryder BB gun.

Santa Claus says:
My elves will get right on that.
Anything else, Joe Wilcox?

Joe Wilcox says:
Can I have an elf, to make me toys all year long?

Santa Claus says:
Great, Joe Wilcox! I'll see what I can do.

Joe Wilcox says:
Thanks, Santa. You're the best!

Santa Claus says:
Glad to hear it!

Joe Wilcox says:
Santa, what do YOU want for Christmas?

Santa Claus says:
Santa wants you to have a Merry Christmas!!!

I'm having big problems with windows live messenger, its because im speed limited because my dad only gets us 400MB a month of internet!!!!!!. It takes about 10 seconds to sign in, then i lose connection straight away and then It takes 20 minutes to sign in. Sometimes I lose connection again and need to wait another 20 minutes. It's driving me crazy.
