Microsoft's Jim Allchin Starts to Blog

Jim Allchin, the man who has led Windows engineering and development for some 16 years and who leaves the company at the end of January 2007 once Vista has been released to consumers, has finally found the time to blog.

In his debut post he does not say when Vista is likely to go gold, but rather tells us that he gets asked a lot about what his favorite feature is in Vista.

The answer? The new defense against buffer overrun exploits called address space layout randomization. "Some of you may know that it's ASLR. But, frankly, there are so many cool things in Windows Vista that it's super hard in general to pick my other favorites," Allchin says.

But he then goes on to give a good plug for Remote Assistance, detailing a personal scenario that he says was not possible before Vista and which " let me solve the problem and get back to work without having to debug a NAT firewall or go through the painful process of walking someone through a complex diagnosis without the benefit of being able to see the screen."
