Error 0x8002801c occurs when there is an issue with accessing the Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) registry. Insufficient system permissions cause this error code when the OLE Control Extension (OCX) file save cannot be completed. This is known to be a common occurrence when using regsvr32 from the command line in Windows 7.

This error code is common when trying to save the OCX file to C: \ Windows \ system 32. In most cases, the DLLRegisterServer call fails due to a resolution issue and has nothing to do with the actual OCX component you want to register.

Fortunately, error 0x8002801c can be avoided by copying the OCX file to C: \ Windows \ SysWOW64 and repeating the process as an administrator. If you are currently experiencing this issue, follow the step-by-step instructions below to resolve error 0x8002801c and register your OCX file successfully.

Fix error code 0x8002801C after failing to save OCX file

  • Open File Explorer and go to the Windows section. Then go to Windows> System 32 and use the search bar to find the OCX file.
  • Copy the OCX file to the clipboard. Then go back to the Windows folder and open the sysWOW64 folder. Then just paste the OCX file.
  • Open the start menu (bottom left corner) and type “cmd”. Then right click on Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator”.
  • At the command prompt, enter the regsvr32 + OCX component. In our case, the last command will be regsvr32 OCX. After pressing Enter, you will be asked if the file was saved successfully.
