Problems with code 0x800704c8 may occur due to incorrectly configured system files in your Windows operating system. And it’s easy to see that your current application slows down and delays response time. Even more importantly, when you run multiple programs at the same time, your computer suddenly fails and unexpectedly fails. The main causes of problems with 0x800704c8 are startup overhead, write errors, RAM regression, fragmented files, unnecessary or excessive program installations.

The problem with these Windows error codes is insidious. It can be anti-virus software installed on a Hyper-V host. The real-time scanning component of the antivirus software can be configured to track files on the Hyper-V VM (VHD) virtual disk.

The error message looks like this:

The server detected an error when configuring the storage on a new virtual machine. The wizard was unable to reset the created virtual machine. After that, delete it manually.
Error adding a Microsoft Synthetic Ethernet Port device

GUID of virtual machine configuration in C: \ Program Files \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Hyper-V is not available: the requested operation cannot be performed on a file whose user-assigned partition is open. (0x800704C8)

Scanning your computer with third-party antivirus software

This may be caused by anti-virus or anti-spyware software that scans the file when it is downloaded. So turn it off and see if it will delete it.

Scan and repair system files on Windows 10

The following command performs a full scan of the protected system files on your computer and fixes any files that cause problems while Windows 10 is running.

Use the Windows key + X key combination to open the main user menu and select Command Prompt (Admin), because you need administrator rights to run SFC.

Check a Disk from Windows

Running the hard disk checking tool from the Windows desktop is easy. In File Explorer, right-click on the drive you want to scan and then select “Properties”.
In the Properties window, switch to the Tools tab and click the Scan button. In Windows 7, the button is called “Check Now”.

In Windows 8 and 10, Windows may inform you that no errors were found on the drive. You can still perform a manual scan by clicking the “Scan Drive” button. This will first perform a scan without requiring repairs, so your PC will not restart at this time. If you experience problems with the fast disk scan, Windows offers you this option. However, if you want to force it, you’ll need to use the command prompt to run chkdsk – something we’ll cover a little later in this article.

After Windows has scanned your drive and found no errors, you can simply click “Close””.

In Windows 7, when you click the “Scan Now” button, a dialog box appears where you can select some additional options, such as whether you want to automatically fix file system errors and scan for bad sectors. If you want to perform the most thorough disk scan, select both options and then click the “Start” button. Note, however, that if you add a sector scan to the mix, it may take a while to scan the hard disk. You may want to do this if you don’t need your computer for several hours.

If you are fixing file system errors or searching for bad sectors, Windows cannot perform a scan while the hard disk is in use. In this case you have the option to cancel the scan or schedule a disk scan to be performed the next time Windows is restarted.

Exclude these directories from your virus scan

To solve this problem, configure the real-time scanning component of your antivirus software to exclude the following directories and files:

  • Default configuration directory for virtual machines (C: \ ProgramData \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Hyper-V)
  • Customizable configuration directories for virtual machines.
  • Default virtual hard disk directory (C: \ Users \ Public \ Documents \ Hyper-V \ Virtual hard disks)
  • Custom directories for virtual hard drives
  • Image catalogs
  • Vmms.exe (Note: you may need to configure a process exception in your antivirus software).
  • Vmwp.exe (Note: you may need to configure a process exception in the antivirus software).

If you are using Dynamic Migration with shared cluster volumes in Windows Server 2008 R2, also exclude the CSV path “C: \ Clusterstorage” and all its subdirectories.
